Netherlands released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital Stereo ), Dutch ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Box Set, Interactive Menu, Multi-DVD Set, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: The Onedin Line was a popular BBC television drama series that ran from 1971 to 1980. The series is set in Liverpool in the mid-late 19th century and deals with the rise of a shipping line, the Onedin Line, named after its owner James Onedin. Around this central theme are the lives of his family, most notably his brother and partner, shop owner Robert, and his sister Elizabeth, giving insight into the lifestyle and customs at the time, not only at sea, but also ashore (mostly lower and upper middle class). The series also illustrates some of the changes in business and shipping, such as from wooden to steel ships and from sailing ships to steam ships. It shows the role that ships played in affairs like international politics, uprisings and the slave trade.

Season 7 is one of the best Onedin Line series with plenty of drama, adventure and incident. After the turbulence and lack of BBC money & strikes that dogged seasons 4 & 5 (which are a mix of 50% all time classic/50% mediocre) seasons 6 & 7 are back to greatness in every episode.

Thank goodness for the Dutch! While the British have dragged their feet in reissuing this outstanding series, the Dutch haven't wasted time and all we await now is the final Series Eight. There is no problem with viewing the DVDs as the Dutch sub-titles can be switched off at the start. My one complaint is that on each of the four discs the label's preliminaries seem to go on forever. But that is a small price to pay for the best extended dramatic TV series based on the sea and sailing ships. There is no need to go into detail here about the many unforgettable characters and story lines as these can be researched easily with a Google search. The sound and vision restoration are uniformly excellent. Highly recommended.
