Synopsis

An exciting saga of ambitious men, tempestuous women and stormy seas. Set in England in the 1860s, when British naval strength was the envy of Europe, the series charts the fortunes of a clever and determined ship-owner whose private life is as stormy as the seas he sails.

James Onedin (Peter Gilmore) is the son of a waterside shopkeeper who has died and left him with no inheritance. All James has is a legacy of 25 Francs and a shrewd business mind. Despite his scheming sister and her husband, who run a rival shipping line, he is resolute in his attempt to start a shipping company in this changing world.

Onedin is ruthless but farsighted, and with steam a possibility for the future, he swiftly embarks on his rise from impoverished seaman to wealthy ship-owner and founder of The Onedin Line.

Episodes include "The Wing Blows Free", "Plain Sailing", "Other Points of the Compass", "High Price", "Catch as Can", "Salvage", "When my Ship Comes In", "A Very Important Passenger", "Mutiny", "Cry of the Blackbird", "Shadow of Doubt", "Blockade" and "Winner Take All"

You know the basic plot, so I won't repeat it. This is the 'complete' set offered in the UK, not the version issued in the Netherlands. This UK version has all fifteen episodes with all opening and closing titles instead of running everything together (the Netherlands Series 1 clips titles and some of the opening and closing scenes). Quality is good, the stories are enjoyable and set the framework for the first three series of this grand program. Highly enjoyable. Gets 4 stars because no extras. Even so, I'm grateful to have it, and will purchase all eight series if issued.

Summary:Yet Another Major Disappointment.......

The one star awarded this release applies not to "The Onedin Line" per se - one of the finest productions ever released by the Beeb.
BUT - Other than the inferior S1-S4 Netherlands productions, no other studio is willing to commit further than S1.
When this COMPLETE S1 version was produced in APRIL 2007 I purchased it as it FINALLY appeared that we could expect better treatment and that further series up to and including S8 might reasonably be expected.
NOT SO - I now possess FOUR DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF S1 - I contacted 2 Entertain Video Ltd/BBC Video and was advised that there are NO PLANS to release further S2-S8 - even as a one off boxed set (which presumably would be cheaper for them than individual series - but would satisfy legions of fans hoping for better treatment).
So there we are - yet another rip-off by a major studio with no understanding of how to treat their customers.
PLEASE - IF YOU WANT FINALLY TO GET FURTHER SERIES PRODUCED - YOU MUST CONTACT 2 ENTERTAIN VIDEO and/or BBC VIDEO - AND MAKE YOUR FEELINGS KNOWN - if you don't it will NEVER happen.
Thanks - how I long to get the complete production on DVD.
