i got this because i had just read another echols book that was brilliant(going too far). this was not. it was very very trite, I think this is really for 15 year olds and then only those with limited reading as the angst between the heroine and hero was very contrived, the main characters were too stereotypical and the baddies too black and white. very simplistic reading

Jennifer Echols does it again with her new character driven novel The One That I Want, which by the way has nothing whatsoever to do with Grease, the musical. I have to say that I trust Jennifer one million per cent as a writer and she is my "go to girl" when I want a good romantic story hence the reason I picked this book up last night and READ IT IN ONE SITTING. Not to mention the fact that she had me googling "hot Asian guys" for inspiration (you'll see why).

First off the bat, I know nothing about American Football or majorettes (Gemma twirls a baton), I'm not really a sporty person and will often bypass any movie or book that is sports related but it didn't really matter in this case and I still enjoyed the story. I learnt this lesson when I watched the movie The Blind Side which I thought was about American Football but it was about much more than that.

Let's talk characters and I'm going to start with Gemma's best friend, Addison. Addison is more of a frenemy than anything else, she is obviously insecure to the core, spoilt and selfish. I desperately wanted Gemma to tell her to get lost and then I got mad with her when she didn't but you know what? Then I remembered a similar situation from my teenage years. There was a girl who I thought was my friend but whenever we were around any boys, she would constantly put me down. I think I may have even confronted her about it once. The thing is, even though I knew what she was doing, we continued to hang around with each other because we were all each other had and so I had to admit that I totally got it. Thankfully, eventually I got away from her as I'd had enough. What I'm trying to say is that even though we all know it's wrong and you shouldn't have to put up with it, when you're a teenager, sometimes you do put up with it until you wake up and smell the coffee.

Gemma is the main protagonist in the story and I think a lot of the things that she is going through are definitely relatable - from the estranged father, the weight and confidence issues to the difficult relationship with her mother. Thank God she has a distraction in the way of Max who is the hot kicker from her school's rival football team. What I like most about Max is that he's not just hot, he's a nice guy who is dealing with his own insecurities.

I also wanted to give a little mention to Carter who hangs around with Max and let's face it, he's a complete doofus but he sort of redeemed himself at the end of the book.

The One That I Want reminded me a little of The Unwritten Rule by Elizabeth Scott so if you liked that, you are sure to love this book. Once again, Jennifer serves up a fantastic story and I CANNOT WAIT to read her first hardback offering Such a Rush when it is published in July, 2012. The good thing is, I don't even have to know what the story is about - if Jennifer Echols name is attached to it then I know I need to be reading it.

For fans of "Major Crush" - 6 Dec 2011
By The Book Runner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book was very similar in flavor to Major Crush (Romantic Comedies (Mass Market)) in its juvenile themes and romance. I have previously enjoyed Echols' "Romantic Comedies" such as The Ex Games (Romantic Comedies) and The Boys Next Door (Simon Romantic Comedies) but I much prefer her more intense romance novels Forget You, Love Story and especially Going Too Far. So while I enjoyed Echols' writing and romance, this story is suited for the younger YA reader.

Gemma and Addison have made the Majorette Squad their junior year and meet a couple of cute football players from a rival high school while at athletic camp. Gemma, who has lost almost 50 lbs to make the team has always been the servant to Addison's "master" role so when Addison decides she likes Max, the guy Gemma thought was interested in her, Gemma doesn't argue with her. Addison is not a nice girl and will try to humiliate Gemma to make herself look better. Max's friend Carter is interested in Addison, but since she has claimed Max, she pushes Gemma in Carter's lap. Gemma doesn't want to go along with it, but it means she can spend time with Max who still seems to be flirting with her.

This story has a lot of different themes it tries to address: the cheating father who left, the emotionally absent mom, the conniving best friend, self-esteem, jealousy and first love. The characters all have distinct personalities and are fun to read about, but Max's ability to psychoanalyze Gemma seems a little incredible. Also, the action only takes place on the weekends as if people who are dating would not call or text each other at all during the week. That just seemed improbable.

There is no doubt that Jennifer Echols is a fantastic writer and I have enjoyed reading all of her books. If you liked Major Crush, you will like this book too.

Would I/Did I buy it? Yes (6.99)
Would I read it again? Maybe
Would I recommend it to friends? Yes

Fun and Cute Read! 8 Dec 2011

I was having Echols' withdrawals since Love Story, The One That I Want was really, really cute! It wasn't on the super serious side like Forget You and Going Too Far, it felt more along the lines of Major Crush. I liked Gemma and Max a lot and I laughed a lot. Great read, but I love everything Echols writes. :)

Little Paper Rose Review 6 Mar 2012
By Little Paper Rose - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I'd been looking forward to reading this one by Echols since it's her first romantic comedy in a while (and it was her romantic comedy that got me hooked on her writing in the first place.)

Since I only gave this book two stars, I can regretfully say, I was extremely underwhelmed by the story, as much as I wanted to love it! I've got to note that this didn't have anything to do with Echols' writing.

I was skeptical about the plot which proved me right when you later learn is all trigged by the one misunderstanding. It was all so simple and underworked. I just found it to be silly. There was never anything exciting and I felt the story didn't really take you with it but dropped you in various places.

None of the characters had any effect on me nor did I particularly find any liking in them. I do like that Echols usually try to create unlikely heros and heroines - which in this case rings true - but there was no build-up to Gemma and Max as a couple, it was crazy rushed (they loved each other pretty much by the second time they met..) to the point it was ridiculous. I just didn't feel the intense chemistry that was supposedly there.

Gemma had a lot of potential to be a relatable character on many different levels (being punk, struggling with weight, being the underdog, etc) but it all ended up making a 180 for me. It was a little too forced and I ultimately didn't connect with her at all.

I basically didn't think there was a strong base to the story and that it lacked a good support. The story felt very young and silly. I will go ahead and say that I've so far only read wonderful reviews about `The One That I Want' so either this just wasn't my cup of tea or I'm insane.
