From the Editor

To paraphrase Simon Wood, if, dear reader, your heart is racing and your fingertips are moist as you turn another page, then the writer has done his job. In The One That Got Away, Simon masterfully tells a dark and gritty tale of a serial killer on the trail of a victim who eluded his grasp.

This fast-paced thriller is not for the faint of heart. Zoë Sutton lives with the weight of knowing that she escaped from an abduction while her friend did not. But survivor’s guilt applies only to survivors. With the killer at large, Zoë’s safety is far from assured.

In Marshall Beck, Simon has created a psychopath on par with Ted Bundy or John Wayne Gacy. He is a sadistic killer who relishes the hunt as much as the kill. When Beck returns to finish what he started, he and Zoë head on a collision course that will bring either death or redemption—or both.

Their ultimate showdown is one of the best I’ve ever read, and indeed my heart was racing and my fingertips were moist as I sped to the end. Job well done, Simon.

- Anh Schluep, Editor

Book Description

Graduate students Zoë and Holli only mean to blow off some steam on their road trip to Las Vegas. But something goes terribly wrong on their way home, and the last time Zoë sees her, Holli is in the clutches of a sadistic killer. Zoë flees with her life, changed forever.

A year later and still tortured with guilt, Zoë latches on to a police investigation where the crime eerily resembles her abduction. Along with a zealous detective, she retraces the steps of that fateful night in the desert, hoping that her memory will return and help them find justice for Holli. Her abductor—labeled the “Tally Man” by a fascinated media—lies in wait for Zoë. For him, she is not a survivor but simply the one that got away.

With an unforgettable heroine, a chillingly disturbed psychopath, and a story that moves at breakneck speed, The One That Got Away is thriller writer Simon Wood at his finest.

Hadn't previously read anything from this author, and "The One That Got Away" has piqued my interest in his other works. This book started off at a cracking pace, and continued to hold my interest until the end, which was brilliant. Only major critique is about the middle part of the book, which lost pace considerably, (hence the four stars) but then picked up again and raced toward a cracking finale...impressed enough to purchase another of his books.....I think that speaks for itself! I doubt I'd have come across this author without Amazon offering this as a free book due to my recent purchases. So, for me, a double bonus.

It's been a long time since I've read something so gripping. Well written, fast paced with an obviously troubled female lead character, I could not put this down. From the very beginning, the author has you hooked. This was my first Simon Wood novel and I will definitely be checking out some of his other work.

As an avid sci fi reader I rarely read this type of novel. Occasionally however,I like a change.
Downloaded this book on spec and really enjoyed it though it could have been a little longer and developed the characters more.
Having said that, it was a good if not overly original plot, well written and at the end I wanted to see if there was a sequel. So, got me away from sci fi for a while and will be waiting for a sequel and reading a few more of this writters books.

This is the first Simon Wood book I have read but it won't be he last. It has a simple but believable plot and moves along quickly without any extraneous rubbish to detract from the main story.

This book starts well with an interesting premise but rather fades away (and, sadly, this is very often the case in crime novels). Holli and Zoe are having a road trip to Las Vegas when they are abducted by a killer. As Zoe gets herself free she realises that her friend is being subjected to horrific torture but there is nothing that she can do to save her as she needs all her energy to save herself - she makes the heartbreaking decision to abandon her friend to almost certain death.

The story picks up a year later when Zoe is still handing the consequences of her decisions. She has made a career choice based on what has happened and she has problems with impulsive violence - this all seemed realistic but rather got lost later in the book. When there is a disappearance near her own home she tries to persuade the police that this will be the same killer but finds little sympathy. She decides to retrace her steps on the fateful night and a detective joins her, eager to find out what will happen. At the same time the author reveals the killer to us and we see events through his eyes too - as the book progresses Zoe will have an opportunity to try again to make things right and honour Holli's name.

As I said, the beginning is fine and interesting as the reader considers what they would have done in a similar situation. I was bemused, however, about why the police never investigated Zoe's allegations in the first place. The story is that they didn't really believe her and then that they couldn't find out where she had been held. When Zoe goes back to do this for herself she soon picks up the trail and, in the end, the police investigation is remarkably smooth.

Not many books fulfill the ubiquitous descriptor of "gripping", but the author captured me from the beginning as surely as his character ensnared his victim. This is a fast paced, easy to follow tale which genuinely had my heart racing at points as the tension mounted. For those who turn to a book purely to enjoy the journey, you're in for an exciting trip; if you prefer to read more critically, there are huge moral mountains to overcome. Is Zoe's feeling of guilt justified? To what degree are we all shaped by circumstance and external forces? Do Zoe and her captor have more in common by the end of the book than she would like to admit?
Thoroughly enjoyed making my acquaintance with this author and will certainly explore more of his work

5.0 out of 5 stars BREATHTAKINGLY FAST-PACED MYSTERY THRILLER! 1 Feb. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition
Anthony Award winner and a Crime Writers Dagger Award finalist, and a thriller writer par excellence, Simon Wood has entertained and fascinated fans with more than a dozen mystery, thriller and suspense novels, including Working Stiffs, Accidents Waiting to Happen, Paying the Piper, Terminated, We All Fall Down, Asking For Trouble, The Fall Guy, Hot Seat and Did Not Finish. His latest offering, The One That Got Away, tops all his previous works in terms of suspense, momentum, thrill, and drama.

Zoë and Holli had driven hundreds of miles across state lines from the Bay Area to Vegas, hoping to enjoy themselves. Once they got to Vegas, they threw off the grad-student respectability and gambled, drank, and partied. And when Zoë comes to her senses, she was tied up in a shed and Holli’s scream of pain renting the night air. When Zoë manages to untangle herself, and knew it was suicidal to attempt to save her friend, she made a dash for safety but not before hearing Holli screamed, “No, no, no. Help me, Zoë!”

Holli’s scream for help haunted Zoë, and author Simon Wood crafted an unsettling story of guilt hovering over her, forcing Zoë to return to the scene of the nightmare of a year ago to seek justice for Holli and piece together the jigsaw puzzles that threaten to stay with her the rest of her life. The One That Got Away by Simon Wood is a breathtaking suspense mystery thriller, furiously paced designed to keep one hooked from start to finish as the main protagonist is on the trail of a psychopath. In Zoë, Simon Wood has created a stunning character who is vulnerable yet determined, a character who will endear with most readers.
