More About the Author

Paul Hichens is recognised by many as the UK's leading CV writer. In addition to heading top CV company 'CV Succeed', giving CV writing master classes, and advising on CVs in public and on the BBC, Paul is very much in demand for his work and has had a long and constant waiting list for many years now. Clients from all walks of life come to him on a regular basis from every corner of the globe; many by personal recommendation.

Over the years Paul has not only helped a great many people into better jobs, but has long been an incisive and fruitful source of career advice to job seekers at all levels and across all sectors.

Significantly, his CV writing methods are new, radical and different.

Early in his career, Paul noticed that traditional CV writing methodology was flawed, contradictory and even counter-productive. He also noticed that rather than question and challenge these problems, most CV advisers either failed to see them or ignored them.

Rather than simply copy flawed and outdated methodology as others seemed to be doing (and continue to do), Paul instead developed his own CV writing methodology that is based not on old and outdated myths, but on real, modern and sales and marketing principles.

The CVs that Paul writes are different, but in a good way. They are frequently more focused, more relevant, more proactive, more enticing to read, better optimised and with a more powerful sales message than typical CVs. Not only that, but they are tried and tested to get results in the job market. Certainly, Paul has the utmost confidence in his CV writing methods (that are described in his book, 'The One Page CV') so much so that when he writes CVs for clients he actually guarantees that their CV will be better than that of any other company (and explains in advance just why).

In short, Paul is a visionary and very unique CV writer, and that is one reason why his book 'The One Page CV' is radical, pioneering and very different to any other CV book you will find.

I was a bit hesitant about buying this book purely because of the title 'One Page CV', and the fact that my own CV was three pages long, and quite detailed. I couldn't see what benefit I would get from taking out quite a lot of what I considered important material, to make it as short as one page. In fact, at the time, I wondered if it would just make things worse, rather than better.

However, I had heard some good things about this book, and I had also been told that it wasn't necessarily all about turning every CV into just one-page, but also about making your current CV more powerful. In my case, I thought that this would be perhaps shortening it to 2 pages.

As I went through the book, following the hands-on practical sessions, I was actually quite surprised to see how easy was to turn my long CV into a clearly better two-page CV. And this tallied with what I had been told. What I wasn't really expecting was for me to improve my CV even further, but that's exactly what happened. And by the end of the book I had turned my long and complicated CV into something which not only looks far better, but which also makes me sound much more like a real expert in my job then than my long previous CV ever did.

The benefits are clear, and I'm confident that I'm going to have a lot more success with my job applications with my new CV than my old bog standard one.

I did hesitate between buying this book and another. The thing that swung it for me was firstly I had heard good things about this book, and secondly the other book included examples that looked quite like my original CV which I knew wasn't working.

I thought it was time for a change, and I'm very happy that I went with my instinct.

If you want to stand out when you apply for jobs, then this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Less is More 12 Nov. 2013
By Sly
Format:Paperback
I had the privilege of reading this book as soon as it was published. It is a comprehensive guide to the dos and don'ts of CV writing in general as well as the one-page version. Informative, entertaining and interactive: there are many exercises that made me realise the errors lurking in my own CV. I have since redesigned it and brought it down from two pages to one. It looks better, is far easier to read and doesn't list irrelevant detail any more. This book is an investment in the future, because it will definitely improve anyone's job prospects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile purchase! 26 Feb. 2015
Format:Paperback
As an American living in Europe I was initially told that longer CVs / resumes were the norm here. I checked out a couple of CV books, and they seemed to be saying pretty much the same thing, so I changed my resume, and made it longer, and in line with the suggestions.

The only problem with that despite a great many applications, the CV didn't work!

I therefore decided to go with my gut instinct and create a more compact CV/resume, and bought this book because it seemed to be the only one on the European market showing the reader how to create a compact resume.

The first thing I noticed was that this book was a lot easier to follow than the other ones, there was no jargon or gobbledygook, just very clear, sensible advice with useful practical sessions that pretty much transformed my resume for the better in front of my eyes, and with surprising ease.
The next thing I noticed was when it came to applying for jobs. All of a sudden I started getting interview requests. I don't think this is a coincidence.
If you want a book that is a real good read that also gets results, then this is the one for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book 21 Nov. 2013
By Sujith
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I've bought 2 CV books now, and the difference is like night and day.

The first one had 5* reviews but pretty much just gave standard advice and was padded out with superfluous sections including dated examples, long lists of verbs and even some claptrap patronisingly trying to teach me how to spell!

This book, on the other hand, is jargon-free, is much easier to follow, and is even a really entertaining read!

On top of that, it not only showed me why the CV I created with the other book wasn't working, but it has helped me create something that looks better, reads better and I'm sure sells my skills a lot better too.

I'm no expert on reviews, but what I can say is that this book is without a shadow of a doubt infinitely better than the other book that got 5 stars.

How do I give this new one 20 stars?!

5.0 out of 5 stars An insight into how to write a CV 23 Dec. 2013
Format:Paperback
I bought this book because I was not having much luck with sending out my CV. I followed the help and advice in this book and now feel that my CV is better for it. A found the examples and advice useful, particularly the chapter on developing your CV writing skills - sometimes you just don't know what to write. There is also a good chapter on how to write cover letters to accompany your CV. All in all I think the book gives a good insight into how to write a successful CV. Hopefully, I'll now have better luck sending out my CV, I'm certainly more confident with it now.
