First off, Shrek! If you buy this expecting a pleasant story like the film, forget it. The film is loosely based on this original in so much as there is Shrek, a talking donkey and a princess. That's pretty much it. Shrek is a vile creature and knows it, stinking the place out and being horrible to all comers. Our son loves it.
The other stories are filled with peril for the main characters; kidnap, the threat of being eaten by a fox, nearly freezing to death, bewitching, it's all there narrated in a strange wordy way. As the book is American, some words bear no relation to how us Brits would say something so you either "translate" or stick with it. The illustrations are good too.
Thankfully, all the stories have a happy ending, the wrong doers getting there just desserts. Just how it should be for a child's bedtime read.
