5.0 out of 5 stars Real Actionable Insights and Ideas w/o the Fluff! 4 Dec 2010
By Think Big Partners - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
As a business accelerator founder and entrepreneur, I will admit that I have more than a few half read self help books on my bookshelf. In fact, I have nearly become an expert in buying a book in this category, then putting it down half read when I realize it is the same old advice and fluff, repackaged to follow the latest craze.
Joe Calhoon's book is more than helpful. It gives clear insight into the planning process and distills each core step into six essential elements. This book provides the road map for an entrepreneur, business owner or startup company to think about their values and then create a plan to execute. Without a plan like this, a company's strategy to achieve success falls into the hands of luck as much as it does by design.
This book will engage your mind and help you begin AND end the planning process with a clearer vision to your desired destination.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great easy but complete strategic planning guide 24 Oct 2010
By Dan Feliciano - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a great book for a small biusimess looking for an inexpensive but complete guide to create their first strategic plan. I would have given the book 5 stars but the kindle version's formatting is poor. Roughly half way through the book most sentences are midlle page aligned making it difficult to read. I hope this gets fixed and re sent to us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed 3 Feb 2011
By David H - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I received this book at Christmas just as I was beginning to set my 2011 vision for my global sales team. I read the entire book in 2 hours on a short flight. A couple of days later I followed the One Hour Plan and completed my team's vision in a neat one-page presentation. The booked helped me organize my thoughts and take all the ideas I had running through my head and put them in a succinct format. My team and others in my company can now easily discuss and follow the vision. I recommend this book for any leader who wants a simple but powerful methodology to put their ideas in print so their teams can better follow them. And the book isn't exaggerating when it says it only takes an hour!

4.0 out of 5 stars 1 Hour is Not Enough 26 Jan 2011
By Karen L. Jett, CMA - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
While this is not my favorite book on strategic planning, it contains a great deal of information that is useful.

The strengths of this book include:
* Nice template for writing a company vision statement
* Good short descriptions of the vision and mission statement
* Chapter 8 on Strategies includes a concise explanation of the strategic categories and handy templates for writing your key strategies

On the other hand, when the author goes into deeper discussions of the vision, mission, and values statements the examples provided cross freely into each other muddying up the previously clear descriptions.

Overall, despite much of the good information, my main reservation in recommending this book is that I honestly don't believe that spending only 1 hour on something as important and critical to the success of your business is a good idea. However, spending only one hour is much better than not doing it at all.

So if you are looking for a quick way to throw together a strategic plan which is clearly outlined and easy to follow, this book is for you. If you want to spend more thoughtful time in creating your strategic plan, this book may be a good starting place...but plan on doing the further reading and spending more than the allotted time.
