The book - written by two ex-pat professors at the Beijing University - aims to explain China in six megatrends in an hour's worth of reading time. And while definitely delivering on the hour, you can also imagine the amount of depth the authors are able to go into in such a slim volume. Still, the six trends are a decent way of going about the problem and if you are strapped for time and need a very rough primer on the country - something sufficient for a cocktail party, not necessarily to conduct business - the book does deliver.

The six trends that are covered are:
- urbanization
- huge manufacturing scale
- rising Chinese consumers
- money
- brainpower behemoth, and
- Chinese internet.

Each trend is briefly described, then the authors chose a Chinese company to illustrate how it benefited from it or how it made use of it. For an one hour format this is probably a good way of going about it but it really does not allow for anything particularly insightful. Or put differently, it will make it easier to piece together / interpret news from China if you are observing from afar but will not equip you to be better at your job, if China is the focus of it.

Some important issues are not covered particularly well, either. While the authors mention the risk of intellectual property / copyright infringement, they do not really go into the different legal environment, which non-Chinese companies often ignore at their peril - leading to many such situations.

You can read Kissinger's 'On China' for a background in Chinese diplomacy, 'China's Silent Army' by Cardenal and Araújo for an extensive tour through Chinese foreign investment, or 'The Party' by McGregor for as complete a painting of Chinese domestic politics as you will get in English, but all of those books will take you days, or even weeks. Towson and Woetzel's book will take you a quarter of an afternoon on the couch and you will understand the key trends that are shaping China's, and so the world's, future. An absolutely excellent book.

The two quotes are clearly smart and have been around the region for a long time seeing the massive changes that are taking place in China. The book does what it says in the title......giving the reader an insight into some of the main characters leading China into the new world and why it is fast taking over from Japan, Europe etc. I liked it, it gave some new insights and provides more data references if you want to delve deaper.
