Product Description

Product Description

Six comprehensive maps lead children on a tantalizing tour of their favorite magical kingdoms and introduce them to the way maps work.

Once upon a time, fairy-tale kingdoms existed only in the realm of the
imagination. But now, this mesmerizing book of maps brings lands like
Neverland, Oz, and Aladdin's kingdom as close as kids' fingertips. Want to retrace Alice's steps through Wonderland? Start at the rabbit hole and follow the map past the Duchess's house to the croquet ground (just remember not to eat anything along the way!). With maps of six different lands to explore, each offering special points of interest, hidden objects to find, and dangers to avoid, young readers will be spending a lot of time in ONCE UPON A TIME — and learning valuable map-reading skills along the way. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This is one of those wonderful books that when you open it, you can't help but think "Wow"! Each double page is a beautiful illustrated map taken from a different fairy tale and there are lots of interesting details for children to spot.
The maps included are those of Neverland (Peter Pan); The Land of Oz (Dorothy and the Yellow Brick Road); Wonderland (Alice); The Giant's Kingdom (up Jack's Beanstalk); Aladdin's Kingdom and the Enchanted Forest where Snow White and her Dwarves live.
Although each map can be poured over for its own sake, there is a tour to follow through each land. A foundation stage child (age 3 - 5) would just follow the route (with their adult reader in tow). However, children from 5+ can put real map-reading skills into practice: the maps have simple reference grids (A-H, 1-5), compass points for direction and a Key to help identify types of path and distances.
My five year old son loves maps and this is without doubt the most inspirational and fun map book for small children that I have seen anywhere. A true treasure of a find.

My daughter is map mad and absolutely loved this book - you have to read the short story next to each map to find your way from beginning point to destination. Beautifully illustrated fold out maps in sturdy paper - good for getting your child to follow instructions. Highly recommended.

I found this book wonderful to use for teaching third grade map skills even if just used as a read aloud. Follow-up activities could easily be implemented from this book. The only thing to be warned about is that in the Peter Pan map, the Native Americans are called "Indians", but then again thats from Peter Pan. But I fell in love with the book for its content and purpose.
