Product Description

Product Description

The story of an old motorcycle mechanic who takes on an apprentice and, together, they restore a 1959 Norton 500cc ES2 motorcycle. The book takes the reader right through the process of restoring an old British classic motorcycle, from rebuilding the engine through to getting the bike on the road. But it is more than just about motorcycles; it is about the passing on of a lifetime's worth of knowledge from one generation to the next.

More About the Author

Peter Uren was born and grew up on the NSW South Coast, the second of four children. After finishing High School, Peter joined the Royal Australian Air Force where he served for 23 years. He worked for another seven years as a civilian with the Department of Defence before ill health forced his retirement.

Peter has had a life long love affair with motorcycles. He purchased his first bike at 18, and in the intervening 40 years has had another eight machines. He still enjoys riding, albeit on three wheels rather than two. His current mount is a Can-Am Spyder Roadster RSS SE5.

Peter came late to writing for pleasure. While the Air Force taught him to write official correspondence and reports, Stroud Writers taught him to write fiction. He joined the group in July 2012 and by September 2013 he had written and published his first novel: The Old Mechanic. Following an overwhelmingly positive response, he started writing the sequel last October. All being well, the new book, Dominator in the Shadows, will be ready for sale soon.

Peter has been married to Judy for 36 years, and they have one adult son.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old fashion ways. 16 Aug 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This bought lots of nostalgic memories of times when motorcycles were able to be worked on by mechanics and things were simpler then rather than today's machines that are more complicated and need diagnostic machines to tell what is wrong. Good read first time and I'm sure it will bring amusement to me when I read it again.

Good honest values and educating the younger generation with real values. Loved his outlook on life and the way he treats people.
4.0 out of 5 stars This is one of those books where I was sad that it ended 26 Oct 2014

This is one of those books where I was sad that it ended. The author seems to know a great deal about old English bikes and there are tidbits of information about the bikes throughout the book. I own and maintain a 1968 BSA 441 Victor and have had many Triumph motorcycles in the past. Most of his insights are spot on. This is the strong part of the book.
The weakness is the writing and story telling. It seemed like this might be his first book. Having said that, I still enjoyed reading it very much.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great read 11 May 2014

Wonderful read that at one level seems like a rather simple story about old bike restoration, but it develops a much deeper story about mentoring and wisdom.
2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Story 23 Jan 2014

This was kind of an interesting story. Not very informative regarding the information that I was looking for, but it's always fun reading about searching for the Holy Grail in primitive MC collecting. There is much that can be learned regarding restoration of classic rides.
