Biography

Somewhere in London a musician carries the keys to the musical kingdom. In his Technicolor sonic scope are all kinds of sounds, from rock to country to soul to pop. Nothing is off limits, as long as it has a groove and goodness based in reality. The musician has been performing for 40 years, but is as fresh today as the first time he stepped on stage. There are no tricks or short cuts here. Far… Read more in Amazon's Nick Lowe Store

Product Description

**** Uncut

"...growing ever richer with age"

"Lowe remains sweetly lethal with a tune"

"...as rewarding as a fresh pint or a long bath for aching bones"

CD Description

"I'm sixty-one years old now, Lord I never thought I'd see 30," Nick Lowe sings on "Checkout Time," a song from his first new studio album in over four years, 'The Old Magic,' set for September release on Proper. The line cuts right to the quick. For though he spent his 20s "busy not fitting into three successive movements: pub rock, punk and new wave", Lowe has mined fertile new creative ground in recent years and the eleven tracks on 'The Old Magic' dig deeper still. 'The Old Magic' was recorded in London with Lowe's crack backing band anchored by Geraint Watkins (keyboards), Steve Donnelly (guitar), and Robert Treherne (a.k.a. Bobby Irwin, drums). Additional musicians include Ron Sexsmith, Paul Carrack, and Jimmie Vaughan among others. The album was co-produced by Lowe, Neil Brockbank, and Treherne. Amidst urbanely insistent grooves ("Sensitive Man"), and spare-yet-imposing shuffles (the aforementioned "Checkout Time"), 'The Old Magic' features three exceptional, recently road-tested Lowe ballads - album opener "Stoplight Roses," "House for Sale" and "I Read A Lot." Then there's "Restless Feeling," a shimmering dance tune worthy of the roller rink that Lowe wrote for a fictional band he calls Coastline. As is his custom, Lowe also peppers 'The Old Magic' with three covers - by Elvis Costello, Tom T. Hall and Jeff West - that fit seamlessly with his originals.

Soundwise it's very much in the same vein as the previous 4 albums from 'Impossible Bird' onwise - another set of very fine songs, some of which would rank in his 'alltime great' category.
Highlights include all the uptempo numbers - Checkout time, Sensitive man, Restless Feeling and Somebody cares for me, plus a couple of standout ballads - I read a lot and 'Til the real thing comes along. Well crafted, arranged and executed songs.

Craftsman at work 16 Sep 2011
Format:Audio CD
This is Nick Lowe revealing who he is, putting into straightforward words and music what so many of us experience in life. And he hits the nail right on the head every time for me. Honest simple, beautifully crafted songs, this is what I listen to Nick Lowe for. As always, the recorded sound is real and uncluttered, and the musicianship is brilliant. Not only that Nick puts his songs over beautifully with his dry, resigned sense of conviction. Knowing what he's produced in the distant past, including 2 of the best Dr Feelgood albums in my opinion ("Case of the shakes" & "Be seeing you") and the stuff he turned out with Rockpile, and knowing what a "full" life he has led, I'm just grateful that he made it to this point in time to give us these wonderful mellow reflections on what it's like to be a bloke in your sixties (like me!!)

Brilliant Album 17 Sep 2011
Format:Audio CD
A classic for nick's contemporary audience. So much of new music is aimed at the teens & twenty somethings. It is brilliant to have a new album and not have to rely on reissues for those lighter moments. What do younger listeners make of these master musicians?

Less than four stars! Give me a break
Gave Nick's new outing a few plays, not an instant hitter for me but neither were the previous few releases. Anyway cutting to the chase the album is great. Read more

Brilliant album
Nick Lowe does just get better and better, he IS like a fine wine. I first saw him in the Brinsleys, then on the Stiff tour, then last year in his Brentford home town. Read more

Nick Lowe
Another good album from Nick Lowe. If his previous few albums hadn't been so great I would rave about this CD, which, although very enjoyable didn't move me as much as the others.
