4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely, imaginative story for children 3 Mar 2008
Format:Paperback
I love this book! It is charming and funny with unexpected twists and turns, rich in imagery, poetic expression and beautifully descriptive words. There is at least as much to enjoy now I am an adult, as there was when I received the book as a child. Re-reading the book now the vocabulary looks quite complicated but I don't recall having this impression when younger and if anything coming across new words embedded in an exciting tale encouraged me to use my dictionary and contributed to my love of literature and writing.

I thought this book was funny and imaginative. There are many references to country pursuits which interested my children, there are plenty of jokes, many puns on words and phrases that I appreciated but had to explain to my children before they understood what was funny along the lines of he held his head in his hands then he held it in his feet. The plot is complicated but very interesting if a little rambling at times. On the whole a nice gift for a child of ten and under.

4.0 out of 5 stars Whimsy is still alive and well 27 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
"The Old Man of Lochnagar" is a deliciously whimsical tale. The opening line puts one immediately in the right frame of mind: "Not long ago, when children were even smaller and people had especially hairy knees, there lived an old man of Locnagar." As you can judge from that sentence, the book was meant to be read aloud - even if you are the only one at home to hear the reading. There are some "children's books" which we should reread every now and then, no matter how old we get. "The Old Man of Lochnagar" is definitely in that category. Its whimsy is food for the soul. Prince Charles can be proud of having created "The Old Man of Lochnagar." As a half-Australian/half-American whose great grandparents all came from Scotland, I hold this book in a special place in my heart.
