Elizabeth Laird heard most of these oral retellings in Jigjiga, the capital of Ethiopia's Somali region, in gardens, bars, small huts and beautiful old Harari houses. I bought this book as a result of an excellent review in Scholastic Junior Ed magazine. It isn't quite what I expected,children found it difficult to take to, particularly as the first story we read was basically that of Hansel and Gretel.
