With 331 pages, this is certainly one of the most comprehensive driving manuals around today. Covering topics ranging from basic driving skills to the evironment and the driver, there is something for any motorist to learn - whether they're a novice or have been qualified for years.
I liked the maintenance section which tells you how to recognise basic faults. This is wrtten in plain English - "Squealing noise from engine area" - and sets out the symptom, probable cause and remedy for the most common breakdowns.
What I didn't like was the slight 'nanny' tone that sometimes crept into the text: "There is no place on today's roads..." "If you are satisfied [with your own driving], should you be?" This, to me, was a finger-wagging approach that could put off some readers.
Overall though, a lot of thought has gone into the design and layout of this book and the DSA Publication Unit at Cardington should be congratulated on putting together the most readable and polished edtion yet of this old favourite.
