I was told Alexaandra Campbell was the new Jilly Cooper. I don't agree with that - she's far better. The Office Party was a tremendously good read but also thought provoking. One of those novels you find yourself talking about to friends.

The Office Party was first described to me as an "urban aga-saga" which I thought would make it ideal holiday reading. It turned out to be much more than that - while still being excellent holiday reading. It is full of humour, wickedly observant and,at one point, it even made me cry.

I liked this book very much...she's a good writer. Good attention to detail but not OTT. The characters are strong... like Virginia..a decent woman battling in her career world, affable Edward who seems to get any woman he wants, Shirley the employee/ mistress and Clara..the mousy wife...not an unusual plot, has been done before...but interesting twists to the tale, sad near the end when we discover the reason for Clara and Edwards' marriage breakdown and a nice happy ending.
A comfortable read.. you want to finish the book to find out what happens to the characters who seem like people you know.
