My 4 year old step Daughter loves the story but I'd have to say some of the dialogue is a bit old for her. Not a problem, just an observation. The art work is great. I still have yet to figure out Vegimals though! ;-) I'll be looking to buy more of these books.

This is the 1st Octonauts Book we have bought for our 4 year old daughter (who is completely obsessed with them!).

It is beautifully illustrated and there is some interesting ideas going on which makes it a little bit different. She loves reading it and can't wait to turn to the next page.

There are a couple of problems though. She is at the stage where she is trying to read her books, but the language in here (although some is tongue in cheek) can be very complex and she gets frustrated pretty quickly.

The second point is that story is based on an imaginary monster, not like the real life animals from the TV series which is a bit of a shame, but I assume the books came first...

Definitely worth buying if your little one is into Octonauts, our's now wants to be a marine biologist (a bit more interesting than wanting to be a princess!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated storybook 10 Jun 2009
By Xrissy
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book has a lovely story and is ever so wonderfully illustrated. My son is 6, but he adores 'cute' animals and such. He thought this book was the bees knees. The paper is an unusual matte... gorgeous quality.

I have meomi desktops on all our computers now, her artwork is so lovely. I can't wait to check out the rest of the Octonauts series. Unique and cute!

3.0 out of 5 stars not quite the same as the tv series 11 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
My 4 year old son absolutely loves The Octonauts on cbeebies so I thought the books would be a big hit. He does like them but be warned - while the art work in the tv series is based on the art work in the books, so they look the same, the plots of the books are quite weird whereas the tv series has more of an educational component (learning a few nature facts). Basically the books feature made-up creatures and fantasy lands not real ones. Also, one of the characters has a different name in the books (Sauci instead of Dashi) but that's just a minor point. I think the best book is the newest one, the Octonauts and the Frown Fish. If your kid loves octonauts then do give them a try, they are quite fun, just be prepared for some wacky stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars meticulously drawn and researched 17 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
This series (books and tv) is becoming a favourite with my 3 year old. The words in the book are sometimes a little complex than what a 3 year old uses (the humour also) but it can still be followed with no trouble and older children will find it is suitable for their level of understanding. The edition I have now has Dashi (not Sauci) as the name of one of the Octonauts just like in the tv series. NB fellow readers - the creatures in the stories are not fantasy: the Architeuthis (the "only lonely monster") is real - it is the giant squid. Although the species variety sounds made up, this is actually in line with biological fact: sightings of this animal are so infrequent that there is some query as to the exact names and numbers of species and varieties out there. The search around the world in the story is also very accurate, as the giant squid has been sighted (but infrequently) all over the world. Even the foreign language words in the illustrations have been carefully researched - the ones I knew were spot on. A top class book! And super entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do I have to read it again?! 7 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
My 2 year old son loves the Octonauts on Cbeebies so when I was out in the local bookstore I saw the books and thought he might like them. Better still they were on offer and with his birthday coming up I thought they'd be a big hit. I kept 2 books to one side for his birthday and let him have one of them to read for bed.

In short, he loves them. The characters within the book's are wonderfully drawn and looks like the TV series which my son likes. The Octonauts and the Only Lonely Monster is a nice simple story that is lovely and colourful. The book has some nice touches too (rotating the book to each point in the compass can cause some parental confusion after a long day) which keep my son interested. The character profiles on the very last page are a particular favorite of my son's.

However, he has wanted it every night since I bought them (this was 6 weeks ago now) and he has been known to want it read several times throughout the day. He's read it so many times that if I slip up with one of the words (including ones such as cryptozoological) he will actually correct me. I've actually been tempted to hide it so I can read something else for him. However in all seriousness it is a book that has kept him entertained and interested. The bright colours and fun story has made him want to take the book everywhere and read it all the time. It has increased his interest in reading which is great and one of the reasons that I bought the books. If you have kids that are fans of the series I would strongly recommend this book as I think it will be a big hit, just remember you may be reading it so often it'll start driving you mad.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Octonauts:&the Only Lonely Monster 13 Jan 2011
By maryloo
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
My 4 year old grandson absolutely loves the Octonauts, so I ordered this book for his birthday. He was thrilled when we arrived with it yesterday, left all his other presents, and insisted that his Mum read it to him straight away, so we all sat round and enjoyed the story too! I wish the colours were a little brighter, but that doesn't seem to worry Jacob. Also, in the books the dog is called Sauci; whereas in the T.V. programmes she is Dashi, which is a little confusing for the children.

My 4yo daughter loves this book. It is one of the books that inspired the TV show, so visually it looks a little different to the show. A great book all round.
