Product Description

This book is written primarily for managers and aspiring managers wishing to develop their coaching skills. There are a lot of excellent books available on the subject of coaching - but most of them are aimed at existing coaches or people wanting to become coaches. Very few of these books are specifically written for managers looking to coach their staff. For many years we have focused on training managers how to coach their staff members. During this time, it has become apparent that there is a significant difference between pure coaching and the type of coaching expected of a manager. The role of a coach is to help others to improve their performance in any aspect that is important to them. The managers prime task is also to encourage and improve the performance of their staff. It is this aspect that makes coaching such a useful skill for managers. However, a professional coach does not have responsibility for the ultimate performance of their coachees. In fact, when the professional coach finishes their contract they quite literally walk away to the next contract. Managers do not have that luxury. Ultimate responsibility for performance resides with the manager. They cannot walk away and say job done . They need to be managing the performance of their staff on an ongoing basis. The OSCAR Coaching Model is the ideal framework to enable managers to use coaching techniques to unleash the potential of their team - whilst ensuring that a robust and ongoing process of performance evaluation and review is created.

By P. Hain
Format:Paperback
I read this book in under 2 hours and found it to be one of the most useful coaching texts for managers who want to use coaching and coaches alike.
The authors have developed a very practical and useful coaching framework (OSCAR) which can not only be used for structuring a coaching conversation but also used to help run meetings and structure any session where people need to run through a process from setting an outcome to reviewing what has happened. The text is clear, easy to follow, packed with examples and exercises for you to do and leaves you with something very tangible which you can go out and start practising on straight away.
I have always been a fan of the GROW model when coaching but the OSCAR model moves the coachee one step further to follow up and review and evaluation.
A great read at a great price. it has been in my briefcase ever since getting it.

This clever book really does what it says - Simplify Workplace Coaching.

The book will help all managers to understand the performance impact of a coaching approach to management and supervision and to develop a straightfoward, practical approach to implementation that can is applicable to any work environment. Focused around the clever 'OSCAR' model, the book offers a set of coaching tools and methods that are simple, logical, clear and will enable even those uncomfortable with the concept of coaching to deliver measurable results.

A powerful new management and supervision skill in a couple of hours!

As a coach and consultant, I highly recommend this short book, particularly to practising managers. Written in clear and concise language, it highlights the OSCAR model, which I believe to be more effective than the more commonly recognised GROW model. A great framework for coaching and problem solving, with lots of good tips about ho to use it effectively. The best coaching investment of the year!
