Because of the fragility of this book, I'd only recommend it to parents of mature little children who know that some things are delicate and need to be treated with care. If your child is still grabbing and manhandling things as if everything is indestructable, then this book won't last five minutes in their care. So unfortunately after a couple of attempts, we've had to put this book on a high shelf out of harm's way for a couple of years until our daughter's old enough to appreciate it.

That important point said, it's a very pretty book. The central design of it is very sweet and a well thought-out way to bring a tunnel book to life. The way in which the characters within the central circle move in and out of their frame as the pages turn is neat. It's a little bit clunky if you don't apply pressure at the right points, but mostly it works very well.

The story is well-written. It manages to be faithful to the traditional story but also bring in a few modern references, and it avoids being stuffy.

This is a beautiful little book, mainly aimed at slightly older girls going through a 'princess' phase, but beware the fragility- a careless pair of little hands could ruin this book in seconds.

Geraldine McCaughrean's retelling of the traditional Nutcracker tale remains faithful to the original ballet. However, it is the cut-out artwork illustrated by Kristina Swarner which makes this book a magical festive gift. In total there are six cut-out pages with parts which move as the pages turn.

The only negative is that I'm not sure the pages would withstand children's handling as I found the first page kept getting jammed and whilst I easily fixed it, I don't think the intended target audience would be so patient and careful. Overall, it's a lovely book to be read under adult supervision.

Sometimes it's nice to see something a little bit different, and this book is definitely that. The books tells the classic Nutcracker story and being set at Christmas it's an obvious idea as a Christmas gift. Some of the pages feature cut-outs which move as the page is opened - it makes the book a little bit different and potentially more appealing.

It's quite fragile (as you would expect) so definitely one to read with a small child rather than left on their own and I doubt children under 4 will really enjoy it too much.

This is a really lovely, beautiful book with gorgeous illustrations. However, I found that whenever I turned the pages they got stuck, the pieces did not move as they were supposed to, and generally it was a frustrating exercise with me having to tug at the bits of cardboard to sort them out. Maybe I got a slightly faulty copy, but I see others complaining of similar things. For them, it may not have ruined the experience, but for me I found it to be a hassle and I definitely don't think most kids would appreciate not being able to turn the pages without things getting jammed. I would think that once you put this in the hands of the majority of children, it won't last long before it gets broken or hurled across the room. It's such a shame because the idea is lovely.

This book is a retelling of a nineteenth century fairy tale, as interpreted by Tchaikovsky in the ballet of "The Nutcracker". What makes this book a little different from the norm is that as you turn the pages the different characters move into the centre of the cut out circle in the centre of the page and then pop back as you turn over, so the Sugar Plum Fairy appears to Marie, the central character, or the Nutcracker attacks the Mouse King with his sword - it's really very clever and magical, even in these days of interactive e-books.

There are 10 double pages and the story is at the bottom in quite small and not dumbed-down language. The story is well told and faithful to the original; as such it's a bit of a strange story in the way that fairy tales are but it was enjoyed by my 6 year old and I think would be perfect for a ballet-mad child. It's quite a bulky book and really one for reading together; we have found it to be robust enough for normal use but a little care does need to be taken when turning the pages. I love the illustrations in the book too which are fitting and detailed, all in all it's a beautiful book that would make a lovely gift and has been much enjoyed here.

Geraldine McCaugrean's retelling of the Nutcracker fairytale. This is an enchanting
re-telling of the story of Marie who receives a special nutcracker doll for Christmas.

A beautiful gift for little girls. Whilst the story is a classic and is wonderful
the magic for me is in the beauty of the book itself. I loved reading this as much
as my granddaughter did and it is a book to treasure and keep for ever.

Visually it is a delight and an absolutel bargain at under ten pounds. All in all
a marvellous book.

This is a lovely book to have and to hold. The story is well written and told. But the beauty here comes in the quality of the artwork. This is a classic children's book and you will enjoy handling this book.

In an age when more and more of my reading is going onto Kindle it is nice sometimes to handle a really well produced book.

If you want to introduce your child to the Nutcracker story this edition is a very nice way to do so.
