I was lucky enough to see Nureyev & Merle Park dance his Nutcracker at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden when I was a ballet/dance student at the Arts Educational Schools in the late 1970's. I was up in the Gods & I was totally blown away by the whole experience. I haven't stopped talking about it since. The pas de deux was finally shown on the Nureyev documentary many years later, along with various little snippets, but there was no sign of a video/ tv release, despite many enquiries on my part! Imagine my sheer delight then when, thanks to Amazon, I saw it was available on DVD whilst browsing a few weeks ago. I simply could not believe it - I had been told that it had never been filmed all the way through! Anyone contemplating buying this DVD MUST BUY IT WITHOUT DELAY. I'm getting another copy for my sister for Christmas. When she saw I'd got it she burst into tears! We watched it together and words just cannot explain what a beautiful production it is. The Nutcracker has never been a favourite of mine, but this is like no other. Nureyev's choreography brings the whole thing to life. He has such a wonderful imagination - you will never see better, trust me!
The only thing that disappointed me was the picture on the front - obviously taken in action and from an odd angle - it looks as though they've pasted their faces on from at least 15 years later, but THAT ISN'T THE CASE - IT'S NUREVEY AT HIS ABSOLUTE BEST IN 1968!! so please don't let that put you off buying it.
So there you have it. I can honestly say that out of all the Nureyev productions I've seen (and I've got them all) this one has affected me the most. I still can't stop thinking about it -an absolute masterpiece.
Many have come along since but there will only ever be one like Rudolf Nureyev. God Bless him.

This is simply a beautifully moving and enchanting adaptation of the old Christmas chestnut which often leaves ballet fans cold - it reworks the traditional story to tell the life story of a great ballerina now retired but still nostalgic for the days of dancing in the imperial company in St Petersburg. Very clever, simple and the stunning performance by the veteran Margaret Scott (lured out of retirement for this production) moved me to tears.

This is surely one of the most outstanding productions of The Nutcracker ever made. The whole performance exudes opulence and brilliance, incorporating a magnificent standard of ballet with a very tender thread running through it. Both the elderly Clara and the young Clara weave so beautifully together that it makes for a stunning show. Sheer magic!

Mary, Swansea.

I CANNOT TELL YOU WHAT AN ABSOLUTE JOY IT WAS TO SEE THIS BALLET IN ITS ENTIRITY - I'VE ONLY BEEN WAITING FOR 35 YEARS! HAVING WATCHED MANY, MANY VERSIONS OF THIS BALLET OVER THE YEARS, BOTH LIVE ON STAGE AND ON VIDEO, I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT THIS IS THE DEFINITIVE VERSION. ANYONE WHO WASN'T LUCKY ENOUGH TO SEE NUREYEV PERFORM LIVE ON STAGE NEED ONLY WATCH THIS BALLET TO SEE WHY HE IS CONSIDERED THE GREATEST MALE DANCER OF THE 20TH CENTURY. EVEN TODAY, I HAVE NOT SEEN ANY MALE DANCER WHO CAN MATCH HIS PERFORMANCE. I JUST THANK GOD THAT WE HAVE THIS UNIQUE ARTISTE ON VIDEO/DVD. MY ONLY CRITICISM IS THE PHOTOGRAPH ON THE COVER. WHY HAVE THEY SUPERIMPOSED FACES ABOUT 20 YEARS OLDER THAN THEY ARE ON THE VIDEO?????
