This book had my own toddlers enthralled and more importantly, engaged, from beggining to end. That is quite an achievement for a book geared at teaching otherwise boring educational topics such as colour, size, numbers etc. to little minds with very short attention spans!

What is more fascinating is that it's not just one book, but a collection of five different books by the same author, Shirley Hughes, but it is acknowledged as continuous prose by my kids because the stars of the book are the same throughout. It includes Bathwater's hot, When we went to the park, Colours, All shapes and sizes and Noisy.

The author captures life through the eyes of an energetic and rather sensible toddler and her side-kick, a younger often bemused looking baby brother.

The illustrations are superb and capture emotions well. For example, feel the stress seeping out of the page in the Noises book when the telephone rings,or jump into a summery day when you look up the colour green. The pastel spreads are delightful and fit the often rhyming text.If you are aware of some of the other works of the author, then you'll be on familiar ground.

The text teaches indirectly, but it works in a strange kind of way. For example, the verse on yellow doesn't actually mention the word "yellow",but implies it by using related words such as sun, buttercups, honey etc.in rhyming verse. It would have been a nice touch in the book if the verse had been introduced with appropriately coloured text,e.g. a headline yellow "yellow".There are also a few phrases included in the text which may need explaining for younger readers such as "Dandelion clocks" and "Midnight cats,cat-a-wauling".

The thing which struck me most is the way gentle reminders are strung along in the text that encourage good behaviour in toddlers, such as being helpful and saying "please".This fits in nicely with other typical Shirley Hughes books such as Being together and Helping, featuring the same dynamic duo. They also feature illustrations of the same style(as found in the companion books of their probable well-known prototype Alfie).

The book collection reflects upon a caring hazey, dazey toddlers' environment and it's warmth will be appreciated by all toddlers who will immediately relate to the characters' lifestyle.

This is not one for those who want a direct approach to learning, instead it encourages a fertile imagination and is more story-like in its contents.Exactly what is needed for introducing higher level concepts and words. Overall,an essential teaching tool for toddlers of about 2 yrs onwards and well worth it.

I bought this book for my daughter when she was about two years old. Whenever either she or I were finding life too stressful we would curl up with this book. It transported us back into the world of happy but real childhood and all the pleasure that brings. Shirley Hughes helped us see the every day and mundane as one sees the beauty of the natural world.

My daughter is now ten and she spends several hours a day reading to herself now. This book and others like it have opened up a world of reading to her which has never closed.

All of Shirley Hughes' books are outstanding and the illustrations make her one of Britains top contemporary artists. This one is particularly recommended for younger children from six months upwards.

The detailed pictures kept our daughter fascinated from the age of 1, and she still loves looking at this book a year later. It's a book she always gets down from the shelf and I would recommend it. The story is short (so not too time-consuming for tired parents) but the pictures are many and detailed.
