There is, of course, nothing remotely serious in the collection - even the more Establishment performers such as Bryn Terfel, Kiri te Kanawa and Placido Domingo serve up lollipops. You could say that many of the songs featured are over-exposed - if you buy six albums of this type it is perfectly possible to end up with six versions of Nessun Dorma and O Sole Mio - but then it just reflects what most people love to hear.
On the other hand, some may be pleased to note that this year's selection is much more even in terms of mood and tempo, and there are no overtly pop or rock arrangements - even the Vanessa-Mae track is without her usual technopop backing. The nearest we get to modernity is with Il Divo's opening track. The Choirboys attempt at Eric Clapton's Tears In Heaven (which, I'm sorry, is awful), and the comtemporary folk of Triniti with Brighid's Kiss.
In some ways the best track is kept to last, at nearly six minutes long, a full and straight rendition of Robert Burns' oft-abused Auld Lang Syne, by Nicky Spence. Normally I've had enough of this song after 30 seconds at Hogmanay but hearing the whole thing, sung clear and strong, made me sit up and take notice - and it moved me.
Although all the recordings bar the Mario Lanza one are new, some are more traditionally produced than others and, on CD1 in particular, there is quite a wide variation in sound level between some tracks - you have to turn up the volume for Nicola Benedetti, Jose Carreras and Renee Fleming, for example. Nevertheless this is two and a half hours worth of great music and if it prompts you and me to investigate one or two of the source albums (top of my list is Sissel and Emma Johnson) it will have served its dual function admirably.
What can I say, some brilliant performances from some of the best names, Bryn is masterful and les Choristes was a wonderful reminder of a lovely little film.
I think that the G4 boys have done so well since X Factor, and their version of Nessun Dorma is much more enjoyable than the Queen cover they did some time ago.
I have to say that after Il Divo and Bryn my favourite track is from the new group Triniti (who I saw on tour with Aled Jones). An intoxicating mix of Celtic and modern and really stand out well. Look forward to them next year.
This album is a must have if you want to have an instant collection of some of the most beautiful music that is available today.
