5.0 out of 5 stars Out of the Latin melting pot 9 Jan 2004
Format:Audio CD
I do find myself coming back again and again to New York City's contribution to Latin Music. "The NuYorican Funk Experience" is typical of what was produced in the 1970's by New York's Hispanic community, in that it is freeer than 1960 Latin Jazz, and less stylized than most Caribbean music. Arrangements are freeer, and sometimes appear chaotic; experimentation is allowed, and, as the title of the series suggest, this is crossover music. Funk baselines enrich an already dense music. Like many others I guess I was exposed to this music first when watching Saturday Night Fever, with Travolta competing on the dancfloor with a superb Latino dance act. On this album the 1970's NYC Hispanic scene really lets rip, free from earlier inhibitions. The Joe Cuba Sextet's "Ooh! Ah!" and Orchestra Harlow's "Horsin Up" are examples of that. Subtle this album ain't, but hot and sweaty, definitely!
