Great boots but nominal size is 3 UK sizes too small
on 24 October 2014
We were looking for boots to use in arctic Norway in January, & the NF Chilkat II boots looked to be good for the job. Based on reviewers' comments I ordered a Men's UK size 8 for my normally UK size 7 feet, & they were FAR too tight (even though supposed to be EE width)! My wife (normally a lady's UK size 5) tried these Men's size 8 and they fit her well with the socks she'd want to wear anyway. So we kept the Men's UK size 8 for her & I ordered a UK size 10 for me, which have now come & fit me well (also with socks on).
Apart from this size anomally, the boots seem great, so I've given them 5 stars: from what we've seen, I could well imagine they'll live up to spec (suitable wear down to -32°C) but we've yet to try them in arctic winter conditions. I'll revise this review if we have any problems. Incidentally, I phoned the North Face technical help line (see their web site) & the people there were totally on the ball & positively helpful.
Later, after using these boots in Arctic Norway in January: we had temps down to only -10°C, but spent a lot of time standing around at night watching the Northern Lights, and our feet were warm as toast despite the relative inactivity. Likewise sitting on a dog-sled, when getting chilled without good kit like this would have been a certainty. Other times, walking on ice & frozen snow needed care (crampons could have been handy) but these boots were less prone to slipping than the less-good footwear of others in the party.
Overall conclusion after use is that they are excellent, perform well, comfortable, and worth the cost. Just remember to buy them big enough.
