4.0 out of 5 stars Superb vendor; good jacket. 23 Nov 2013
Colour Name:TNF Black| Size Name:Medium|Verified Purchase
This jacket is not as warm as I would have expected, but that means it's not too much on an autumn day and I use my down filled North Face jacket for winter anyway. The most annoying aspect of the garment is that the material from which the inner jacket is made won't slide smoothly over shirts when I'm putting it on; I suppose that's a property of the type of fleece NF use. The vendor was superb. Because of my experience with my winter jacket (see above) I ordered a medium fit, however, sizing seems to be different between ranges. When I asked if I could exchange it for a large size, Guerilla Trading exchanged it very promptly and efficiently.

3.0 out of 5 stars Devolution for classic jacket? 13 Dec 2013
I'd always been a big fan of Northface and considerd my old Triclimate jacket a classic, until the waterproof lining began to flake off the inside. My faith in Northface was restored by its warranty promise, and it replaced the jacket free-of-charge, with the newest version - the Evolve II.

Sadly the design of this new jacket seems to have taken a step back and failed to address the few failings on the older model.

Gone is the fantastically useful "Napoleon" chest pocket, perfect for stashing sunglasses, ski googles or a mobile phone away from the evil scratchiness of keys or loose change. And while they've robbed us of a pocket, they've done nothing to address to issue of the old version - the mesh lining to the pockets being perfect for catching on key rings and other spiky objects.

The inner fleece feels and looks thinner and less cosy, compared to the older model's inner jacket. The blurb on the label promises more warmth with less weight and in moderate, urban conditions it seems to retain heat, but I'm not sure I'd be confident it's going to keep me warm on a longer hill walk, unlike the original Evolve.

Unfortunately these design decisions smack of cost cutting, rather than offering customers a better jacket.

And penny-pinching seems to have gone on with other specifications - as other reviewers have said, the zips aren't great and only one small strip of velcro is lavished on the hood compartment (from memory the original Evolve had three), meaning it opens far too easily while you're wearing it.

It's also true that there is something about the interior of the fleece lining which makes it impossible to remove the jacket without the sleeves turning inside out - which while not a fatal flaw, is annoying.

Bought this for myself and is a great jacket, light and waterproof but If your a chilly mortal I would suggest you go for a thicker down type.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but pricey winter jacket 5 Dec 2013
Colour Name:TNF Black| Size Name:XXX- Large|Verified Purchase
This is an OK jacket offering good insulation to keep the cold out, good water-proofing to keep the rain out and unassuming appearance. It has a detachable liner, which can be worn as a fleece. Because the outer is so light, wearing it all together is no problem. The outer is also lined with some netting material.

The only downsides I have found are the zips on the jacket outer, which are very fiddly to use in the cold, and the built-in hood, which is concealed in the collar, but keeps deploying on its own. It would be better if the zips were in the same style as the ones holding the fleece in place, and a collar that holds the hood had more velco to hold it shut, or the hood was removable.

It could also do with more pockets. There are two zipped ones in the outer, which offer no protection from the cold as they are unlined, and four in the fleece - two zipped, and two without zips. It's a shame these pockets are not accessible from the pockets it the outer, because of the netting liner.

I guess these issues could be overcome with some cutting and sewing, but at this price I would expect a better solution out of the box.

My friend has one of these and I tried it on very comfortable, a nice fit and it looks good. He has had it for six years and he will get another in due time. I need a new coat and this jacket has always taken my fancy. Looked online best price was on Amazon.
Had this in my Basket last night at approximately 12am with the price at 110 came to purchase this afternoon and the price is 138 and I wanted next day delivery too. This has of course taken away any desire to buy it from this site.
Time to look elsewhere I think.
Well done Amazon.
