My Very Favourite Veryan 6 Nov 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
THE NOBLEST FRAILTY is the first novel by Patricia Veryan that I ever read, and it remains my very favourite. I *love* the hero, Craig (though Veryan made some errors in her depiction of his Canadian background. For instance, the Mohawk in Canada were allies of the British, so it is therefore most unlikely that Craig's Mohawk manservant would have attacked and tried to kill him during their first encounter in the Upper Canadian wilderness. Nor, for that matter, were Indians--particularly chiefs' sons--in the habit of hiring themselves out as servants to whites). It's always disappointed me that he barely figures in any of her subsequent novels. He's such a daring man of action, yet in SANGUINET'S CROWN, the conclusion of the Sanguinet Saga, he appears briefly, gets wounded, and plays no further part in the adventure. It's also a pity that THE NOBLEST FRAILTY is no longer in print. The publishers should reissue it--but when they do, hopefully this time the cover artist will get Yolande's hair colour right! A russet-haired Yolande, indeed! (this refers to the softcover edition. The cover of the hardcover edition is lovely)
