Amazon.co.uk Review

Impressively modern in design, The No-Grain Diet brings a realistic viewpoint to the problems of weight loss in a genuine effort to improve the health of an ever-growing number of obese people. Offering a variety of "food plans," along with a set of techniques aimed at controlling emotional eating and cravings for "bad" foods, Dr Joseph Mercola clearly understands how to motivate--in one section, he suggests that rather than "living by the scale," we measure our success in relation to the fit of our favourite pair of slightly-too-snug jeans. Many recipes are included, most of which are free of the boring flavour substitutes so common in diet books.

The diet itself combines several familiar concepts. The "no grain" model emphasises organic vegetables and quality protein, with limited fruits and absolutely no simple carbs. Mercola's idea of "quality protein" is somewhat startling--he is deeply concerned about toxins, and urges grass-fed beef over potentially mercury-filled fish. His main point is frequently reinforced: refined grains of any type are basically deadly and eating them should be viewed as an unhealthy addiction.

Here, the book veers off in a new direction: rather than gently nudging our habits in a new direction, he suggests we break what he insists is an addictive cycle with a method called "EFT," or "Emotional Freedom Technique." As a way to avoid surrendering to desires, his system of tapping acupressure points and repeating affirmations is used to overcome them. While repeat dieters will understand the necessity of examining emotional ties to food, Mercola's voice becomes a tad strident, and possibly downright offensive to those with a different opinion on what constitutes an addiction. --Jill Lightner, Amazon.com

Product Description

Healthier than Dr Atkins, huge in the States, this all-new weight loss plan is the last diet you'll ever need. Forget fats as the biggest dietary sin, the latest scientific evidence now shows that the real culprits in escalating weight gain are grains, starches and sugars. By eliminating grains from your diet, you actually reprogramme your mind and body to release fat and burn it, and as a result the weight you lose is kept off - permanently. This all-new low carbohydrate diet moves on from Dr Atkins, cutting out the unhealthy side-effects of that diet and including a wider range of healthy foods than Atkins or any of his successors. The No Grain diet offers three plans tailored to suit your needs: The booster plan (to ease you more gently into the plan), the core plan (for faster results), and the advanced plan (for those who need to lose a lot of weight fast for health reasons). What's more, it presents a unique psychological technique to combat cravings, bolster your self-belief and help you ride low periods, which usually lead you to break the diet. With delicious recipes and advice on additional factors to further support your new healthy lifestyle. The No Grain Diet is the last diet book you'll ever need. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

No grain, No Pain Diet 26 April 2004
Format:Paperback
I read The No Grain Diet once from cover to cover and then again, making notes. This was an easy book to read. I know a bit about EFT and found the explanation of how to use it to breakdown emotional issues and remove cravings valuable.
The eating plan is healthy and the theme throughought the book is one of optimum health and disease prevention. During the first week on the plan, I felt fantastic, more alert, lost weight and inches and best of all didn't feel hungry at all.

Shame about the diet.

Mercola has really done well to explain the hows and whys of low carb and stone age ways of eating. The first half of the book really is great.

It's a shame that he wasn't so rigorous when writing the diet plans. There's contradictions, confusion, and a very fiddly (for want of a better word) meal plan.

However the background info given is that good, I'd still recommend that you buy the book.

Also worth checking out is Neanderthin by Ray Audette.

the no grain diet! 20 Oct 2011

i have red it a couple of times now. And I am following the recomendations! I am 50+ and been on a diet since I was 10...... This works! I went to france for 10 holydays and ate acording to Mercolas ideas - and lost 100grams instead of gaining 2+kg as I usually do on vacations.(no bred, pasta, sweets but all I wanted of the delicious meditarenian food) Beeing hard to yourself in the beginning (no harmful carbs) is important. The rest is planning and prioritizing time to make good meals. Good luck! And ask your butcher to get grasfed meat!(good fat with good amount of omega3!!!) Another book that maches well with his philosofy is Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. So now I know why my years of vegetarism did me no good. I wish you all the best and keep on chewing ;-)
