Product Description

Captain Cal Winter, MC - disgraced Iraq veteran, recovering addict and reluctant assassin. Blackmailed into service for a shadowy private army, Cal’s bloody past catches up with him when he is assigned to protect a Russian oligarch.

Sergei Belov, multi-millionaire patron to a controversial internet whistle-blower, has access to secrets that the Russian FSB wants. The streets of London explode into violence when Cal hunts down the assassins, proving that the best form of defence is attack.

Cal’s rag-tag team of veterans enlist the help of a Russian intelligence officer, tracking the Russian mafia gang supporting the clandestine FSB operation and a bizarre cult of Dante-quoting dispossessed, who are also seeking to murder Belov.

The trail leads to a shattered nuclear reactor in Tatarstan and a web of treachery, spun in the dying days of Communism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent debut 16 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I always have reservations about new authors to kindle, however this book is superbly edited with none of typo / formatting errors you often associate with them. This book has a refreshing approach to the spy/military thriller and I would highly recommend it to fans of the genre. This book is clearly well researched by someone who knows what he is talking about. I was especially impressed by the convincing dialogue which really does add genuine life to the characters. This book is a fast-paced thriller which I thoroughly enjoyed and has introduced us to a new anti-hero who is both dark and at times properly funny. I am positive we will see more of him. I will definitely get the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gets under your skin... 19 Aug 2013
By PatB
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This had all the hallmarks of a really good read for me... found it very difficult to put down before going to bed ("Oh alright then, just one more chapter...") and the only other author to do that for me was Lee Child.

Elements of Raymond Chandler's in the main character (trying to do the right thing under trying circumstances) but he also possesses the brutality of Dashiell Hammett's The Continental Op and Jack Reacher.

Dark humour and wisecracking dialogue, and good to see a strong, interesting leading female.

The fact that the author has Been There, Done That comes across clearly via a cinematic telling of events which makes you feel that you're there beside the characters at all times, plus the attention to detail with regards to weapons, operational procedures, and inter-branch/service liaisons and hierarchies.

The treatment of the morality of the Mercenary is also very interesting (what's Good, what's Bad, what's Justice) - as is the question of how people are recruited into various aspects of 'The Services' and/or 'The Circuit' (mainly via blackmail, bribery or both).

Really enjoyed this read - hope there's another one on the way, either with Cal Winter or with a completely different set of characters in a brand new setting...

N.B. This will definitely make you question what you read in the papers as The Public Versions Of Events!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cal Winter - an anti-hero is born. 9 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am an avid reader and thrilled that there is a new author that has arrived; importantly Cal Winter has landed in great style. Here is an anti-hero that is a product of our age. The plot is contemporary, relevant, clever and with genuine twists that will keep you guessing.

With all debuts the author has taken time to set his stall out; the pace soon picks up and draws you in leaving you wanting more. This is a genuine page turner. I highly recommend this book. Thank you Dominic Adler for giving us Captain Cal Winter, I hope there is more to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely must read this book! 19 Aug 2013
By Mrs G.
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am an avid reader of the thriller/crime genre & a huge fan of especially well written & researched material. I had complaints from my family when I opened the pages of The Ninth Circle, as they ceased to exist for me for the 8 hours it took me to consume this brilliant novel...

It is well written, well researched, full of action, intrigue - just the right amount of humour, which is extremely well placed & I'm still smiling from a few lines in particular.
You can be certain that you won't be disappointed, it delivers on every level & in my humble opinion, Jack Reacher & Mitch Rapp have some serious competition.

Buy it, read it, love it, then give it to your other half - mine's already reading...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent debut 4 Sep 2013

An excellent debut, a real page turner and genuinely unputdownable. Believable dialogue, some cracking stereotypes and not overloaded with product placement or TLAs. Well done Adler, looking forward to the next one !

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb debut novel 12 Sep 2013
By LBx
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book! Intelligently written, the intricate plot is fast paced, never predictable but always believable. Central characters are subtly defined revealing enough detail for the reader to connect with, without losing the allure of intrigue. Cal Winter is a particularly charismatic anti-hero; flawed granite, you never quite lose sight of the good within the bad. There is an abundance of well-researched "operational" detail to appeal to the enthusiast, just the right amount of humour to soften the edges, and the more romantic of us can fall just-a-little-bit in love with the hero! A superb debut novel, I hope we get to further the journey with Captain Winter.

This is probably the best new author I have read in years. The main character is a superb anti-hero, with some great one liners, but still manages to maintain a depth of character. He has some very modern issues, which surprised me, but this is 2013 and this aspect made it very refreshing. Other characters in the book tend to be realistic to their roles and occupations, which made it rather amusing, as the author has got it so right! The plot twists and turns which makes it so exciting, as it is so unpredictable and adds a certain amount of apprehension at times. The technical aspects are correct, which is important to me, as so many other authors get it wrong, which is infuriating. Dominic Adler has certainly done his research.

A great read, which I would recommend to all my friends and family - I am looking forward to the next instalment and a long series of books, I hope!

10/10 Mr Adler - Thank you!

It's the kind of book that would make a high-action film. Perfect for 20 and 30 year olds. Lots of blood and guts
