Product Description

Product Description

True Ninja Traditions is a collection of three of the most profound historical works on ninjutsu to have come out of Japan. They have been brought together here for the first time to an English speaking audience and contain some of the greatest ninja secrets to have ever been written down. These works are: The three Shinobi Scrolls of the Gunpo Jiyoshu samurai manual, written in or before 1612, a document approved by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first great shogun of Japan, The Yoshimori Hyakushu or the Shinobi-uta which consists of 100 ninja poems that have been attributed to the 12th century tactician, Yoshimori and are considered to be the oldest teachings on ninjutsu to exist and finally the Ninpiden or Secret Ninja Transmission by Hattori Hanzo & Others in which the main body of the work is dated to 1560 and is considered to be one of the three great ninja manuals. Together these sort after scrolls will take you into the world of medieval Japan and divulge the shinobi secrets of espionage, ninja battlefield tactics and much more.

True Ninja Traditions is an absolute gem, three real historical manuals from real ninja, not to mention Hattori Hanzo (well his father!). It contains a ninja manual from 1612, one from 1560 and 100 undated but pre 1500's. An amazing find, all these years of the same rehash, and now actual ninjutsu. The binding is not as good as True Path but who cares.

If you are wondering why there are any negative reviews here, it is to do with the authors "battle" against the Bujinkan organisation, they are not happy that he is proving their ninjutsu to be more than a little fake. Shame, everyone who is interested in ninjutsu will love these historical manuals.

3 treats in one 20 Jan 2012
By Ninpo26
Format:Paperback
After reading Shoninki, released by the same author, I decided to go further, and get this book. It was not a mistake. I must say this book is written much more scholarly, than the Shoninki translation, due to a greater number of footnotes. I realize, mr. Cummins wanted both books to be written in such a way, but the publisher insisted that the Shoninki translation be made more "readable". Anyway, I really like the way this one turned out. The large format is very practical, and readable.

As for the material in the book itself; this edition contains three books: the Ninpiden itself, the 100 Ninja poems, and three Gunpo Jiyoshu scrolls. While most people would probably buy this just for the Ninpiden, I must say, the other two books inside, are not in the least less valuable or informative than Ninpiden itself is. Though, as a big fan of Shoninki, I must say I miss some of the more philosophical and esoteric material included in Shoninki; these books are very practical, and concentrate on tools and methods of physical infiltration instead, though there are sections devoted to communication skills and espionage. So whoever gets this book, I advise you get Shoninki with it (and Bansenshzkai when it comes out though I haven't read it myself). If you are in any way interested in the shinobi arts, be sure to get this book, and other translations by the same author (there is more on the way). I believe them to be the most reliable (though not without flaws) translations of these old shinobi texts out there currently.

Interesting Information & Lots of Diagrams 29 May 2011
By Freak of Nurture - Published on Amazon.com

I found this to be a more entertaining read than either of the two translations of the Shoninki I've read. There a lot of diagrams and discussions of Ninja Tools (Ningu),Ninja Strategy (Boryaku) and other information I haven't seen in other places. This is a bit less esoteric than the Shoninki and the Ninja Poems and Shinobi Scrolls are, for me, as interesting as the Ninpiden itself. I found some of the footnoting and referencing a little lack lustre, but this did not greatly diminish my enjoyment of the book. If you want an insight into historical ninjutsu, this is a good place to start.

True Ninja Traditions, Informative to say the least. 21 May 2011
By Brian Jenkins - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
After having purchased and read Mr Cummins translation of the Shoninki titled "True Path of the Ninja", I eagerly anticipated its companion "True Ninja Traditions".

The book itself in my understanding needed translation both from archaic Japanese to modern Japanese and then translated yet again into English. Not being able to read and understand either Japanese text, Mr Cummins version of the Ninpiden (which this manual is transcribed from) fit my purposes very nicely. All of the information was translated as closely to the original as possible and the illustrations were very acurately reproduced.

The translation provides an unblinking look into the way Ninpo was done in the days of famous Ninjutsu families such as the Hanzo family and others, and provides great insight into the way things were done in times of old. It also provides tactics that still ring true to this very day.

While Im sure the translation process was quite tedious Mr Cummins and his translator Ms Miname do their utmost to relay the feeling that the original authors from the 16th century sought to illustrate. Any word or phrase that would normally be difficult to illustrate in the translation from Japanese to English is well footnoted and made easy for the common or novice reader to understand.

As a student of Military History and Tactics I highly reccomend this book to anyone who is interested in the aspects of clandestine warfare and espionage.

Great read! 19 Nov 2011

Great work to Antony And Yoshie. It is nice to see people out there spreading the word on historical ninja. I have read other books by Hayes and Hatsumi, and I will always be grateful that they set me on the path in search for real ninja, but it is nice that people have access to things like this now. Real ninja manuals, not the clap trap that is passed off as real ninjutsu. Anyone who saw in the various bujinkan schools and books the stuff that I refer to and set out on the path of real knowledge will appreciate this effort. It is fantastic that people can get these translations, the authors have done a great job here. I still say that those willing to, learn the japanese, get the old catholic dictionaries so you can learn it in the edo period dialect. That way you will know that these are authentic, and you can delve deeper into it if you wish it.
