The Nightrunners (1983) is an early novel by Joe R Lansdale. Part pulp noir, part splatter, this is a tale of survival and revenge. In the story, Becky is raped and her husband, Monty, is not up to confronting the situation. Meanwhile Brian blames Becky for the death of his best friend. Amidst the confusion and confrontation, Becky and Monty leave Galveston and head for the pine forests of East Texas. Here the hide out in a cabin deep in the wilderness. Brian and his friends hatch a plan for revenge against the couple. This is when the supernatural element kicks in and the God of the Razor turns up (it is his first appearance in a Lansdale story). The novel, like Act of Love (1981), turned crime on its head when first released, with its added element of splatter horror and sex; but The Nightrunners goes one step further, incorporating the supernatural. The book takes a look at the evil and violence humankind is capable of; there is horror, violence, sex, gore, moral corruption, a black '66 Chevy, and a plastic Jesus with a light bulb inside. Only Lansdale can fuse both horror and comedy together and turn out a cult classic. This, his second novel, and Act of Love were forerunners of the splatter movement, when Jack Ketchum and Richard Laymon were churning out similar books, like The Cellar (1980), The Woods Are Dark (1981), and Off Season (1981). Other novelists would continue to write splatterpunk throughout the 1980s to a greater or lesser degree of success, but Lansdale's first two books should be regarded among the originals and the best.

A truely horrific story from Joe Lansdale.Literary torture porn and not nearly as good as his later more professional work.
