Product Description

In the California wilderness no one can hear you scream.

San Francisco Forensic Psychiatrist Jo Beckett doesn’t dissect the body or the crime scene – she dissects a life and a mind, recreating the victim as a person, piecing together the story of their death to get to the truth. And then she goes after the killer.

Autumn Reiniger wants something special for her twenty-first birthday. Daddy’s bought her the car and the apartment, but now she wants excitement. And what Autumn desires, she gets.

Her father signs-up her and five friends for an ultimate urban reality game. ‘Edge Adventures’ alert the SF police that a ‘crime situation’ is underway, so the authorities will ignore any squealing tires or desperate cries for help.

Then – when working on a case nearby – Jo Beckett encounters a group of men carting six sullen college kids to the woods for a wilderness adventure. Suspicious, she takes a closer look. And winds up with an invite to a birthday party she may never leave …

What a Woman! 8 May 2011
By FictionFan TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Jo Bennett, the heroine, is investigating a suspicious death in the wild, mountainous terrain of the Sierras, when she and her boyfriend Gabe stumble across a group of teenagers being abducted and held to ransom by a group of assorted villains. Autumn Reiniger, spoilt little rich kid, thinks she and her friends are on an adventure weekend arranged by her not terribly nice father, but in fact the baddies have taken advantage of this scenario to carry out their nefarious scheme.

Trapped in the wilderness, surrounded by nasty people with great big guns, thank goodness Jo was there to help. Armed only with a knife and a pointy stick, Jo and her hunky but in many ways rather useless survival expert boyfriend set out to bring everyone home safe. Fortunately Jo possesses what must surely be superhuman strength and stamina and the young people are inspired by her to really quite amazing feats of their own, considering their ever-increasing list of nasty, life-threatening injuries.

A truly extraordinary series of coincidences ensues and some technological marvels, such as Jo's ability to receive incoming texts on her phone while being unable to get a signal to send for help.

I understand this is not the first of Jo Bennett's adventures. I can only say `What a Woman!'. With women like Jo around I know I feel safer.

A routine, far-fetched, wilderness adventure. Quite readable, but you'll have to be willing to suspend your disbelief a lot if you want to enjoy this.

By russell clarke TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
A load of rich over-indulged kids become the target for some ambitious criminals in this high octane thriller from Meg Gardiner. If ,like me, you thought big deal, and were in fact more looking forward to reading how these mewling spoilt brats got a much needed dose of harsh reality then you are in for a shock. For the author has sussed that this in itself would not grasp that many potential readers( though I was well up for it ) so she has thrown into the mix a pair of highly professional hyper- altruistic law enforcement types casually dispensing life lesson soundbites( see the review title for a salient example ) , a rampaging cowboy psycho with a funny eye ( I swear this is not a Carl Hiaasen novel ) and an old murder mystery being followed by two women , one, a kick ass uncompromising type, driving around California.
All jolly good fun unless you are on the one of the abducted teenagers or Jo Beckett & her boyfriend Gabe who literally stumble upon the plot to kidnap a bunch of superannuated preppies and end up having to extricate everyone out of the predicament . It is Jo Beckett who is the real star of the show here ,and her feats are almost superhuman but she is aided somewhat by the plot which relies greatly on willing suspension of disbelief , coincidence and borderline miracles.
None the less I thoroughly enjoyed The Nightmare Thief. It's utter nonsense , but it is well written exciting nonsense .It has one aim in mind .To give the reader an adrenaline fuelled merciless adventure thrill ride. The denouement gives in to obvious temptations as regards the development of certain characters but you know what? ..... after what they go through to get there it's hard not to confess that they probably deserve it.

I struggled with the first 9-ish chapters of this book, whilst Gardiner sets the scene for all the action that is about to unfold. I couldn't really remember who was who, and thought I wasn't ever going to really care. However, once we get into the nitty-gritty kidnapping, it turns into a fast-paced action thriller which is packed full of non-stop action that will keep you turning the pages. However, it's much more action adventure (about survival) than thriller.

I believe this is the fourth book which follows Jo Beckett, and whilst I hadn't read the other three, I didn't feel I needed to in order to read and enjoy The Nightmare Thief. I was a little disappointed that we don't see much of the forensic psychiatrist side of Jo, but I suppose for that I should read the first three books in this series.

You might need to suspend belief in real life for a while, but it'll keep you entertained for a few hours. It even has a life lesson, moral-to-the-story type ending. It wasn't predictable, and the story intertwines and weaves its way towards the ending, but at the same time, there weren't any jaw dropping light-bulb moments. It was enjoyable, but perhaps not memorable enough for me to remember in a few weeks' time.
