I was so looking forward to getting this latest Archie Sheridan instalment. Chelsea Cain's last book was my first and although I hadn't read the first two I had enough background to pick up on Archie's past. This book is the 4th in the Gretchen/Archie series but you actually don't see Gretchen Lowell in this book but it didn't make the slightest bit of difference to me.

Once again it doesn't take long for Archie to get thrown in at the deep end quite literally. Following his absence from work he throws himself back into this new case with renewed vigour. I adore Archie as a character; he is terribly flawed but a great character that is written extremely well. We also see the return of Susan Ward who I also love. She is a reporter who is always doing the opposite of what she is told. In this book she is no different. She trails Archie as he tries to track down this latest killer.

We also at the same time see what Susan has been investigating relating to a sixty year old tragedy. Unknowingly the two cases are interlinked and Chelsea Cain works wonders intertwining the two stories. As usual the body count is pretty high and there are no holds barred for the gritty and grimy crime scene descriptions.

Her writing is as usual well paced and full of suspense with the added bonus of two characters that work well together. The story itself was good and as usual Chelsea Cain has produced a book that is highly enjoyable.

Although this book is said to be part of the Archie/Gretchen series I am sort of glad that Gretchen didn't appear. No doubt we haven't sent the last of her but it was nicer still to see a different killer emerge from the shadows. As usual, I finished the book in just under two days, and then found myself disappointed. Why didn't I take my time and make the book last longer? I suppose like everybody else I will just have to be patient and wait for the next instalment.

Chelsea Cain's first three novels squeezed more than was probably feasible out of her admittedly brilliant creation Gretchen Lowell, a.k.a. The Beauty Killer, and while The Night Season is marketed as Archie/Gretchen #4, that's also stretching things a bit far because the psychotic Gretchen plays a relatively minor role here, although that has to be considered a good thing in all honesty. I must say though that whenever I see some of the darker pictures of the author, she really does look spookily similar to my vision of the fictional serial murderer that has shot her to such well-deserved fame!

Portland detective Archie Sheridan, he of the numerous psychological scars and even more on his body (including one shaped like a heart), shares the lead with reporter Susan Ward. Their city is suffering a natural disaster with many drowning due to heavy rains that forced the Willamette River to burst its banks. Suspicions grow after it is established that the latest female victim had been poisoned before she went into the water, and drowning was not the cause of death, and soon it emerges that three of those previously thought to have accidentally drowned have in fact been murdered which means - guess what - yes, we have yet another serial killer on the loose. The flooding has also unearthed a skeleton, a man who might have died during a devastating flood more than half a century ago that wiped out an entire neighbourhood and had been thought to be the cause of the deaths of 15 people. Susan Ward suspects otherwise.

If this had been yet another Beauty Killer outing, I would have given it a miss. Thankfully it isn't, and with Chelsea Cain's trademarks of uncompromising graphic imagery and a brooding atmosphere of imminent doom, what you do get is a worthy if slightly short suspense thriller with good plotting, well drawn characters and an overall writing standard that is well above the average. It is to her particular credit that she has managed to seamlessly weave a story that combines two very different time periods and two very different methods of killing someone, some natural, and some by premeditated design. I think as authors go, Chelsea Cain must be one of the scariest in real life....

As a fan of the previous Gretchen Lowell titles I really couldn't wait to get my hands on this book as I never know what the beautifully crazy serial killer is going to do next. The only thing I do know is that it will be inventive, it will be twisted and certain characters will return to face the wrath time and again. So I was a little disappointed when I found out that she only really had a cameo at the titles end with the rest of the book devoted to a new killer with a remarkable method of murder.

Or rather it would have been remarkable had the author dialled it back a bit and come at it from a more logical point of view. Without going into detail about the murderous method I would suggest that if you are to read this title that you have to suspend your disbelief to the nth degree and when backed with an interesting subplot backstory the reader will be highly entertained. Finally add the usual degree of prose, decent pace as well as wonderful authorly voice to the title and you know that it's a pretty decent title provided you can escape the illogical mess of the murder method especially of a certain state trooper who personally I think is more comedic than of any real sense. If however you do want to stick within the realms of possibility then this may not be Chelsea's best title for you and you may wish to return to an earlier title for a wonderful sense of righteous murder by one of the Crime World's most memorable serial killers.
