Product Description

In the City, it's always two-thirty in the morning and raining. Truro Daine, alias the Night Mayor, has the power to assume any identity he chooses. He is the 21st century's Napoleon of crime and, against a film noir landscape, the Dreamers of genius must prevent him from entering their world.

This book doesnt take itself seriously and so so neither should you. The Night Mayor is great fun to read, with lots of well researched kitch 1940's movie cliches planted throughout the storyline which is a refreshing change from the oneliners we have become used (especialy in American film over the last 10 years). Kim Newman doesnt seem to be interested in writting a work of literary genius here just in having fun with a great idea. Ive put this book between my Terry Pratchett and William Gibson collections but next to my Robert Rankin books. Great CyberPulp Read it when you need a break

Fun but frothy 23 Feb 2000
Format:Paperback
It's a fun little post-modern cyberpunk movie nostalgia romp of a book. Well written, well paced, but when you scratch the surface there isn't anything really there. Newman really knows his movies, but too much of the data and criticism comes through undigested. There's a lot of camp cliche recognition fun, but not much else.

Format:Paperback
A clever story in which a criminal escapes into a vitual reality world based on old gangster films. I enjoyed it a lot but you need an encyclopedic knowledge of old films to get the references, and on the downside the characters are one dimensional.
