Product Description

When a murder suspect broke her back across a brick wall, Alisha Barba's dreams of being a detective were shattered. Now on her feet again, but with her career and private life in limbo, she receives a message from an old school friend, Cate Beaumont, who is eight months pregnant and in trouble.

On the night they arrange to meet, Cate is mown down by a car that kills her husband instantly. As paramedics fight to save her life, they uncover the first in a series of haunting and elaborate deceptions. They trigger a dangerous quest and as Alisha and her old boss, Detective Inspector Vincent Ruiz, travel deeper into a world of sex-trafficking, slavery, and exploitation, they must confront their own prejudices - and will come to question the very laws they have sworn to uphold.

I was not sure about buying this book,as I am fed up with the insipid psychologist who is the main protagonist in his other books like Shatter.
I much preferred Ruiz as the main character, and along came this book where, thankfully, there is no role for the weak, insipid, psychologist with the domineering wife. The main character here is a policemwoman recovering from horrific injuries, she also happens to be a Sikh. The story is involving and slowly unfolds into very tense thriller about illegal immigrants;the sex trade;illegal adoptions and forcing women to produce babies for others.Alisha pursues all the multifacetted strings, with some help from Ruiz, and her "boyfriend".Along the way,we gain insight into the Sikh community as well as the trials a tribulations of being a smart, woman cop in a hierarchical, formal Police organization.I was really drawn in to the whole story as it developped.
Well done,and more about Alisha?

Great 4 April 2008
By Kixxy
Format:Hardcover
I picked up this book as it was on special offer. I'd never heard of the author or read any of his books but I certainly will now. Different from your current bookshelf thrillers this book had me turning page after page even when my eyelids were begging to close. I enjoyed the characters and thought he really brought them to life. There were lots of twists and turns and I certainly didn't expect the ending. I've given it only four stars because I've not ready any of his others but I'm off to buy them now!

good quick read 2 Dec 2007
Format:Hardcover
I actually really liked this book, and it grabbed me from the get-go. You get drawn into the personal life of the main character Alisha from the outset & build-up of intriuge surrounding her friend Cate makes you want to continue reading. The slow revelation of facts & events brings out some surprises & some things that are guess-able. You could easily read this in one day if you wanted, but in doing so it doesn't leave you empty like many would. Great swift read.

Don't bother. Re-read his "Shatter"
The plot is far too complicated, the heroine unsympathetic, there's too much gratuitous violence, and some of the writing sub-Mills and Boon. Read more

Found it a tiring read
I do usually love Michael Robotham's books, however, to be totally honest I think this was probably his worst - for me anyway. The story line is somewhat imaginary and it drags on. Read more
