1942. Seaman Schiller is the only survivor of U-198, a U-boat that went down somewhere off the coast of Coquina, an island in the Caribbean. Thirty years later, he finds that the long-forgotten sub has been found by hotel owner and salvage diver David Moore. When a young native disregards warnings and opens the wreck to look for valubles, he unleashes a wave of terror that reaches out from the dead past. Boniface, a one-time voodoo witch doctor, has brought the mummified crew back to life, hungry for flesh, thirsty for blood. Now only he can break the spell...
If you like zombie stories, this one is right up your street, containing enough blood, rotting flesh, and intestine munching to satisfy the most rabid horror fan. But what raises it above the mundane are the two main characters; Moore, wracked with guilt at the deaths at sea of his wife and daughter, and Kip, the local law-enforcement officer who once could have been a witch doctor himself. Two men faced with a nightmare neither can comprehend and do not know how to resolve. I almost yawned when that hoary old cliche - the sexy lady scientist - cropped up, but thankfully it did not ruin the story. McCammon plays clever games with our expectations; his prose is clipped and colourful, highly descriptive and atmospheric. The prologue detailing the sinking of the U-boat is good enough to serve as a short story all of its own.

I've read a lot of McCammon books by now and this one is an early and yes it's not as slick as some of his later classics but it's a damn fine horror novel, as usual all the characters have their backgrounds explained enough for you to become emotionally attatched, you even feel sorry for the U-Boat crew in their undead torment but really this is plain adventure, good and evil, if you like McCammon's later master works give this a try as you can feel the genius develope almost page by page. Dive! into this one.

DAS' BOOT meets DAWN OF THE DEAD

This is the second book by McCammon that I read, and again I'm please, ok this is fiction and it can be unbelieveable "SO WHAT" it is a story and a fast paced one at that.
A Nazi Sub rises to the surface after 40 years with the crew mummified and still living due to a VOODOO curse. The towns people, (thinking they have a historical find), tow it into the local harbor. I'm sure you can piece the rest together. Yes, there are vivid scenes of cannabalism that are down right nasty and disgusting, but it is a horror book and if you don't like it you shouldn't read it.
Simply put, I liked "THE NIGHT BOAT" I recommend it to any horror lover. It is an easy read worth the time. Trouble is, it is out of print & hard to find a copy, the flea markets are the best place to try and look for one.

Nazi Nightmare

This book is for readers who like to curl up in their favorite chair, turn the lights down low, and be scared out of their wits. Try reading this during a storm for maximum effect. This story will send chills like cold fingers down your spine. The details are so vivid the reader will imagine he/she is fleeing and fighting Nazi spirits alongside the main character. C'mon Robert, write us another one!

What lurks below.

Pretty good little horror story. McCammaon is one of the best writers out there and although this little yarn about undead Nazis in the Carribean is a tad muttled due to the fact that is was his second book, it's still a cool story. Read this then rent the movie BELOW and have a scary night of submarine terror.
