4.0 out of 5 stars Complex thriller with a real flavour of fear 18 Jun 2003
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
Caitlin Montgomery from an old Southern family wakes one morning to find her bedroom covered in blood; her estranged husband dead and very little memory of 'the night before'.
although there are several deaths throughout the novel the pace is not rushed, if anything it's fairly slow but with a superb build in the tension surrounding Caitlin, her family and the new psychologist in town Adam.
We meet a vast array of characters through the book and each has a distinct personality cleverly drawn by Ms Jackson and enabling the sometimes complex plot to be followed more easily.
There are several chunks of the book concerning Caitlin and an internal monologue - which instead of being tedious are tense and honest bringing your empathy for her to the fore.
Not a sexy book and though its a fluent read it's not something you can skim through.
I enjoyed it, hadn't got a clue who the 'baddie' was but I found it a slower pace than her other books I've read. If you like her style of writing you'll enjoy it and it's worth a read. You might want to keep the light on and switch off the phone though - you never know who could come knocking!

4.0 out of 5 stars Absolutley brilliant !!! 11 Sep 2006
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
I found this book quite slow to start with and if this was the first book I had read by lisa Jackson I may not have finished it. Instead knowing how brilliant her other books are I perservered and I was not disappointed. This book has so much mystery and suspense that in the end I finished the last 100 or so pages in one go as I could not put it down.

The slow start is forgiven for the super middle and ending.

I can't wait to start the next book, the morning after.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hard going 26 Sep 2012
By Jenny
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book had a good storyline but was very badly written. It was riddled with spelling and grammar mistakes and the author obviously has little familiarity with police techniques, she actually called the fluid that is used to detect minute spots of blood at crime scenes 'luminal', it should be 'luminol'. She used the same spelling more than once. If I could have given it less that 1 star I would have done so.

3.0 out of 5 stars more psychological 2 Dec 2013
Read from library. Written 2003, reissued 2013. Have read loads by this author. Couldnt connect to these characters. Have never had this problem before with this author. It jumps all over place. As others said, its hard to keep tabs on who all characters are. Its psychological like Sophie hannahs books (but those I can follow). Did not enjoy this book. In fact have had it on loan since june & just keep renewing it. Tried numerous times to get into it, but couldnt. Made myself finish it. A chore, not a pleasure. I didnt like any of the characters. Also agree with others that book is slower paced than her other novels. Someone at says she knew killer within 1st 3 chapters. Amanda doesnt appear by end chapter 3. By then, I had thought kelly was killer and setting caitlin up for the fall. I was close but a miss is as good as a mile. Gave 3* as fair book really.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good thriller 28 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Another great thriller from Lisa Jackson. Set in Savannah, it revolves around a dysfunctional family with secrets. Montoya from her New Orleans novels also makes an appearance.

5.0 out of 5 stars The night before
Very good story. Could hardly keep up the enlarged family and their offspring. Plenty of twist and plots. Looking forward to next book.
