"It's time to start comparing Christie to Marsh instead of the other way around." --"New York "magazine

Product Description

Commemorating 75 years since the Empress of Crime’s first book, the second volume in a set of omnibus editions presenting the complete run of 32 Inspector Alleyn mysteries.

DEATH IN ECSTASY
Who slipped cyanide into the ceremonial wine of ecstasy at the House of the Sacred Flame? The other initiates and the High Priest claim to be above earthly passions. But Roderick Alleyn discovers that the victim had provoked lust and jealousy, and he suspects that more evil still lurks behind the Sign of the Sacred Flame…

VINTAGE MURDER
New Zealand theatrical manager Alfred Meyer is planning a surprise for his wife's birthday - a jeroboam of champagne descending gently onto the stage after the performance. But, as Roderick Alleyn witnesses, something goes horribly wrong. Is the death the product of Maori superstitions - or something more down to earth?

ARTISTS IN CRIME
It starts as an art exercise - the knife under the drape, the pose outlined in chalk. But when Agatha Troy returns to her class, the scene has been re-enacted: the model is dead, fixed in the most dramatic pose Troy has ever seen. It's a difficult case for Chief Detective Inspector Alleyn. Is the woman he loves really a murderess…?

Excellent series, wonderful resource for a collector.

But why does Amazon not label this the second (2) in the Ngaio Marsh collection? All the others (10 of them) are numbered, but this one isn't. Can't understand it.

I have tried (twice) to get them to change the listed name -- it is so much harder to find all of them if this one isn't labelled like all the others -- but my modifications aren't accepted.

Ho Hum. Make sure you buy it along with all the others.

This is the sixth Roderick Alleyn book and is particularly noteworthy for his (then) future wife's (Agatha Troy) introduction to the series.

Sonia Gluck, a melodramatic and provocative artists' model, attends Agatha Troy's summer art school in Buckinghamshire. Within a background of histrionics, drugs and promiscuity amongst the art students, Sonia arranges to adopt a dramatic pose for her next portrait with props including a drape and knife. Unfortunately, by the time she is pushed into position for her portrait to be painted, someone at the art school has altered the props so that she is fatally penetrated by the knife under the drape.

A further murder of one of the suspects from enforced swallowing of acid follows. This murder is a good example of Marsh's readiness not to shirk from including and describing gruesome methods of murder, something that generally one does not associate with crime writing in the 1930s.

Alleyn has to disentangle various motives amongst the art school's attendees for the killings and handle his growing feeling for Agatha Troy who is one of the suspects.

I enjoyed reading this very much and think this is a well-written and well-plotted crime story. Positively recommended!

Three more tales plus a bonus tale at the back of the book. Highly recommend this tale of Inspector Rodrick Alleyn of Scotland Yard a gentleman police officer and his partner Fox who wins the hearts of the downstairs staff and gets more information to help the case.
Three great who dunnit tales would recommend to anyone who enjoys Agatha Christie styled tales to read
