The powerful presence of Russell Crowe and the skillful writing and directing of Paul Haggis (Crash) give The Next Three Days an emotional heft to match its taut suspense. Schoolteacher John Brennan (Crowe) is stunned when his wife Laura (Elizabeth Banks, W.) is sentenced to life imprisonment for murder. As he watches her emotional decline behind bars, he becomes determined to break her out of prison--and The Next Three Days tracks his meticulous efforts, including wrong turns that threaten to capsize everything. The movie is most compelling in how it follows Brennan's wrenching emotional changes. He's not some cold, focused secret agent--he's torn between his painful devotion to his wife and the frightening possibility of what could go wrong, including the possible cost to their son. The outstanding supporting cast includes Liam Neeson, Brian Dennehy, and rapper RZA, but the vast majority of the movie rests on Crowe's shoulders and he carries it like an athlete. There's something deeply physical about Crowe's performances--his emotions seem to fill his entire body, even as his expressions are incredibly subtle. A vivid and tense portrayal of a husband willing to destroy his life to break his wife out of jail

The Next Three Days has good leads in Elizabeth Banks and Russell Crowe. Their marriage seems normal, and has little niggles and bickering as well as affection. nicely they aren't perfect, and they're played with great amiability by Crowe and Banks. Therefore the arrest scene when cops suddenly swarm their house and drag Banks out for a horrific killing is upsetting and extremely dramatic.
It's a well handled scene in a movie full of them.
The script is smart enough to throw us a few red herrings, and the director even manages to instil regular jolts of fear in the audience for Crowe's character, when he keeps messing up his attempts to become a fledgling jailbreaker.
Nicely the cops and guards are far from stupid, and you get the impression that Crowe's amateur criminal is a rabbit carefully trying to make it under a sky full of hawks, with little to no chance.
There is violence, and it's handled with high tension and excitement, and nicely the film always feels like it's under control, accelerating towards its climax. The pace keeps getting better, and there are some unexpectedly good relationship moments as Crowe and his son try to cope with the stigma of being the family of a convicted murderess.
The climax is a very extended series of nerve jangling and adrenaline filled chases, and scenes of daring bravado. Director Paul Haggis keeps us biting our nails and sat up in our seats the whole time - rarely is such a complicated pay off handled so well.
My only gripe is that I hoped the film was going to play with the characters' ambiguity a little more - however, that's a very minor grumble about a movie that was a very exciting and extraordinarily well made piece of entertainment.

How many times have we seen remakes over the years that don't even come close to the original. "The Departed" was almost as good as "Infernal Affairs", but most times remakes are a total waste of time and usually only made because people don't like reading subtitles.
This film is a remake of a French thriller called "Anything for Her" (which i enjoyed) and i went to see this in the cinema because there was nothing else on and i like Russell Crowe. I was amazed how much better this was. The French one felt a little rushed to me and lacked a certain element of tension, and didn't have much characterisation. This film is the opposite, it's well paced, and even though i knew the outcome i was still gripped because they added so much more to the third act of the film. The characters are well rounded and likeable and you will actually care if they succeed or not.
If you like a good thriller, or a fan of Russell Crowe then this is a must for anyone.

Russell Crowe excels in this film as an average guy, (teacher in ill fitting jumpers) who is thrown into a nightmare when his wife is arrested and subsequently convicted of murder. Old Russell, in desperation as all appeal avenues fail, devises a plot to bust her out. This film is sheer brilliance in every sense of the word. Russell is a man pushed to the edge and consequently, some of his actions do not always make him the goody, yet you still want him to succeed. Will he? I am not telling you, but let's just say that you will be kept guessing during this nail biting film. I read reviews at the time of this film's release and they were quite poor. Well. don't listen to pretentious critics, this film is bloomin' great! There are twists and turns aplenty and the acting by Russell and his wife, Elizabeth Banks is great. A real gem!

The Next three days - VERY good
I loved the movie. Was expecting something else, but I found it to have a different aproach than what one would expect. Highly recommended. A thrilling movie.

worth a watch
I really enjoyed this movie. I'm discovering that I like Russell Crowe more and more. This movie has a very tense and exciting ending. I recommend it.
