Product Description

Product Description

Sandi Toksvig presides over four of the best recent episodes from the ever-popular topical comedy show. "The News Quiz", 'the finest topical comedy panel game known to radio', has been providing headlines and punchlines since it first aired in 1977, and spawned the hit television panel game "Have I Got News For You". In these four episodes, panellists including Andy Hamilton, Jeremy Hardy and Francis Wheen take a wry, sideways look at the news, interpreting events big and small in their own unique ways. With guest stars including Sue Perkins, Hugo Rifkind and Mark Steel, they face questions on topics as diverse as obesity, the US Federal Reserve, Derek Conway's suspension and fuel duty protests - as well as Jeremy Paxman's pants, naked flights for nudists, the broken toilet on the International Space Station, and why 44 isn't the answer to life, the universe and everything. As ever, Sandi Toksvig is in the chair, while newsreaders Chris Aldridge, Harriet Cassand Corrie Corfield read a selection of humorous cuttings. Re-live the highlights of this smart, silly and satirical game show, in the company of the very wittiest and brightest commentators. The news has never been so much fun!

This is what it says on the cover and blurb, 4 selected shows. As such it suffers compared to some earlier collections where items from across the year were selected and organised into themes with linking comments, but is still entertaining as the News Quiz usually is.

The 2008 offering 29 Dec 2008
By Julie Cutler TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Well this is the 2008 selection of the four best episodes from the earlier part of the year. It does suffer rather from the demise of the wittier panellists such as Coren and Smith. It's only in the final episode that the performers rally into a heated discussion about how to defend yourself from attacking sharks and giraffes where the flavour of the past shows reasserts itself. From the news that is served up, (Menzies Campbell retires, obesity, the initial financial crash, Derek Conway MP's inventive expense account, the cigarette display ban), very little happened over the selected shows, compared to the doom and gloom of the present. It might have been improved if they went back to the old pick and mix style of the earlier selections (and can we have those rereleased on CD, please!).

Still you'll know to watch out for menacing giraffes lurking in the bush!
