Releases of studio outtakes like this are often filler for some artists. But not in the case of Van Morrison whose perfectionism has meant many great songs not making the cut to his albums over the years (see the tremendous "Philosopher's Stone" for example). On these tracks we hear the genesis of the Astral Weeks album with early takes of some of the songs that would resurface a year later. The sound is rawer, his voice is powerful and soulful, and the songs are bluesy with an improvisational quality. Listening to this album reminds me of Bob Dylan's "Basement Tapes" and the aforementioned "Philosopher's Stone". My version does not have the bonus CD of jams.

I confess - I bought this album for 2 pounds from a well known cheap hardware/household chain store in the UK that shares a name with Jonny W, the well known English rugby player. For 2 pounds, who wouldn't?

As well as the ubiquitous and much covered Brown Eyed Girl, I was taken by the dark and disturbing TB Sheets. On repeated playing, the raw, bluesy style of early Van grew on me and the studio outtakes raised a smile (The smile I smile, anyway). But hidden among these delights is what has become my all time favourite Van track - Beside You (could be a toss up with Into the Mystic).

In fact, I will probably be condemned as a heretic for saying that I prefer this version of Beside You far more than the track of the same name on Astral Weeks. I'm happy to admit that Madame George gets better treatment on Astral Weeks, but... I struggle to listen to Beside You on Astral Weeks - all that namby pamby Spanish guitar twiddling just doesn't compare to the strong bass line and driving organ on this version. There I've said it. I'll probably burn in eternal hell fire.

It could be a case of primacy over recency - I heard the New York Sessions version of Beside You before I heard Astral Weeks in its entirety; for me, this is the definitive, dynamic, true stream-of consciousness version of a classic VM track.

As for you, make your own mind up. Spend a fiver getting this album from Amazon (the same album, called The Bang Sessions, in the US apparently costs $40). As for the other tracks - they're all good, all worth listening too - an insight to the developing artist.

It's all right - buy the album, send your mind and pee yourself getting my in jokes.

The main CD of the New York sessions '67 is a classic. Everyone interested in Van's music between Them! and Astral Weeks should own this. The bonus CD is Van's kiss off to the record company for pulling a contractual obligation on him. It's excruciating. One listen is all you'll manage and maybe not even that. But we'll ignore that and give 5 stars for the main item.

A great album closer to Them than Van's later sound with Van's traditional trademark for dabbling in blues, soul and rnb.Great songs with an emotional T.B sheets which leaves you as emotionally drained as the singer himself. The bonus disc is a complete throw away, Van giving the record coming the finger.
