Review

"Probably the most important work on typography and graphic design in the twentieth century." - Carl Zahn, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston "If you're interested in design and typography, you should buy this book...it's still one of the best typographic how-to books we have." - Adobe Magazine "A comprehensive, practical handbook to guide the typographer.... The tone, here, is that of a master craftsman; practical and informative, it neither avoids detail nor loses sight of broad principles." - Times Literary Supplement "The book is as well worth reading today as it ever was.... Tschichold's lucid writing makes his words timeless." - Photography Annual "An essential text for understanding contemporary trends in visual communication." - Choice "Lucid, logical, impassioned, and challenging." - Journal of Graphic Design"

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent insight into 'Modern' typography 2 May 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book was written in 1928 and it is testament to Jan Tschichold that it is still relevant today. Unfortunately the publishers didn't read it before going to print, because the layout of the book itself is a disgrace. The book even shows two pages from a draft version where Tschichold corrects the errors they have made. That said, if you want an introduction to typography with illustrated examples then this *the* book to buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Graphic Designers 19 Jan 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
There is a reason this book is so well regarded as one of the key pieces of reading within design communities. Whilst some of the information may not be totally up to date with modern design ideas (as noted in the foreword), this is still a must read.

Tschichold's writing is to the point no nonsense perfection.

5.0 out of 5 stars The roots of Peter Saville and Factory Records 17 Jan 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you like the album covers of Joy Division, New Order, Section 25, Durrutti Column and many bands of this period you will love this book. It is about typography, so the letters and the layout are the main focus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating book you can't put down 6 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
It is exciting to read the opinions of a master at an early stage in his career where they are so powerfully expressed and challenging.

The introduction by Ruri McLean is of great interest also and helps appreciate the work in context.

5.0 out of 5 stars A design manifesto 6 April 2006
Format:Paperback
A design manifesto from a designer who influenced typography more than most. Don't let people tell you that because Tschichold later recanted the main arguments presented here that this isn't relevant, it STILL is.
Any serious student of design should own this book not simply borrow it from the college library. There can be few times when a whole different style of design are shown to have had a call to arms that are available to purchase still. This is the call to arms of what became the new international style of design.
