4.0 out of 5 stars Early work by an English scholar. 21 Sep 2009
By R. Walters - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
M. R. James at the time of the first edition of this book in 1924 by Oxford Press was Provost of Eton and formerly had held the same position at King's College, Cambridge. A corrected edition was issued in 1953 and has been reprinted. While it represents the virtues of British scholarship of its time, readers may wish to consider newer works which have the benefit of more recent scholarship and which, for some, may appear in a more accessible format. One other reviewer mentions "books not included" with the Old and New Testaments. James is concerned with the New Testment apocryphal books and not those of the Old Testament. They are two separate matters as is as well the Old Testament pseudepigrapha.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kindle version not the same as hardcopy - missing Jame's notes. 19 Nov 2013

The Kindle version is NOT the same as the print edition, do NOT be fooled. If you need the M.R. James notes, do NOT buy the Kindle version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Christian Reference Book 21 Dec 2011
By Laura Lewis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is another must have for anyone studying Christian theology or just curious about the time period immediately following the era of Jesus Christ's ministry. This book is not really for the novice reader of theology since the material may confuse some not familiar with the books that are not in the canonized Biblical Scripture. However, if you are looking to study heretical doctrines and myths that plagued the church in the early era of the church, this book is a great place to start. I recommend this book to all scholars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the OT Apoc-Pseudo. 27 Feb 2013
By Pastor Pete - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this NT Apocrypha maybe 9 months ago or so and found it very complete and adequate. My first work with it was concerning the infancy legends of Jesus. I planned to buy the 2 OT vols. and have a whole set. Well, today I recieved the OT vols. and WOW! Impressive appartaus notes with lexiographical and source-crit info. Now I wish my NT one was like the OT ones. The OT books are much larger, basically twice the size. So they won't really look like they are a set on the shelf, but no matter. Still, this volume is very affordable and complete and helps unravel some of the inspirations for historical and even modern day pseudo-Christian cults.
