Product Description

Review

At first glance, this book offers interesting insights into the successes and failures of a range of contemporary and, often celebrity, entreprenuers. It should inspire and encourage would-be and existing entreprenuers alike. However, importantly, this work also has academic value. It is very well researched and presented in manner that provides students with a useful tool to consider the application of theory from traditional sources. Unusually. Dan Matthews book pulls together the stories of many modern entrepeneurs under one cover and highlights their motivations and backgrounds with some useful tips. This approach provides sound arguments for the nature versus nurture theory and the components of business known as the three or, as I prefer, the four Ms marketing, money, management and (motivation). Though, I could not recommend it as a sole read for a start-up entreprenuer, I believe it earns a place in a modern academic reading list and would give any budding start-up entrepreneur a valuable heads up! --Ian Moncrief-Scott, Enterprise Small Business Management at the Isle of Man International Business School and Small Business Start-Up Training on behalf of the Isle of Man Department of Economic Development

Product Description

This is the ultimate guide to winning in business. Drawing on the experiences of some of the world's most successful entrepreneurs and corporate executives, it sheds light on the cut and thrust of commercial relationships and provides a candid insight into what it takes to thrive as an entrepreneur. Themes include the role of failure, luck and risk, people, power, money, greed and ambition. Together, it reveals the essential underlying truths which define business in the twenty-first century. The book contains thoughts, anecdotes and advice from 35 business people drawn from a variety of backgrounds and career paths. Multi-millionaire heads of billion-pound businesses rub shoulders with chief executives of some of the world's biggest blue-chip companies. Also featured are celebrity investors, business TV show contestants, and even those who have fallen foul of the business rules and survived to tell the tale. The Rules can be read cover-to-cover or as a reference book. Readers interested in one particular aspect of business or a particular industry can find the information they need easily. The first half is divided into individual biographies of each contributor and the second half is formed of chapters relating to aspects of business where readers will uncover valuable hints and tips. It is a must read for anyone wanting to grow a business, become wealthy and powerful, or make a meteoric push up the career ladder.

I found "The New Rules of Business : Leading Entrepreneurs Reveal Their Secrets for Success" to be a riveting read, which was both illuminating and fascinating.

The human stories of the 35 featured entrepreneurs all rang true, and Dan Matthews has done an excellent job of distilling, into a highly readable book, the common and unique experiences, and character traits, that have allowed these diverse people to succeed, despite numerous setbacks and detours.

Although all of the entrepreneurs have obviously spotted good opportunities, many also reveal that they have a knack for spotting bad opportunities, taking sound advice, learning from their mistakes and working well with others.

We are used to successful capitalists being portrayed as brutal, short-term competitors, but for me this book highlighted the equivalent importance of humility, determination and co-operation.

I cannot recommend this inspirational book highly enough and hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.

I read this book on a flight across the Atlantic and I was very glad I chose it for the trip. The book is compelling in that you get new views into individual entrepreneurs based on excellent interviews by the author (you can see he's a good business journalist!). It was fascinating to see the differences between different entrepreneurs - so often the advice they give conflicts with each other! I think this is a good thing, and for me the biggest take away from this book is that each person has their own path.

This isn't a book that analyses this to death or which proposes any grand theory - the author simply reports the stories and in the main leaves you to make your own conclusions, which is refreshing.

I recommend reading this a) for interesting personal stories and b) to broaden your view of what business 'should' be.

I liked this book because it works for both start ups and people who have been in business a while. For start-ups you've got all the essentials and for people with more experience, there's plenty of really interesting anecdotes and facts to help you grow the business or take it in another direction. Comes in two sections: You can dip in, pick people you are interested in and follow their story from rags to riches or flick through to the second section and read the rules.

Easy to read, informative and amusing.
