According to John Adair, the most important word in the leader's vocabulary is "we" and the least important word is "I". But if this is true, it raises one important question: why do psychological analyses of leadership always focus on the leader as an individual – as the great "I"?

One answer is that theorists and practitioners have never properly understood the psychology of "we-ness". About the Author

S. Alexander Haslam is Professor of Social and Organizational Psychology at the University of Exeter. He is a former chief editor of the European Journal of Social Psychology, a recipient of the European Association of Social Psychology’s Kurt Lewin award for excellence in social psychology, and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research.

Stephen Reicher is Professor of Social Psychology at the University of St Andrews. He is a former chief editor of the British Journal of Social Psychology, a recipient of the British Psychological Society’s annual award for excellence in teaching, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Michael Platow is Associate Professor of Social Psychology at the Australian National University. He is on the editorial board of European and Asian Journals of Social Psychology, a holder of several major grants from the Australian Research Council, and a former President of the Society of Australasian Social Psychologists.

The first thing to strike is the way the book embodies the spirit and practice of Social Identity (SI) Theory in itself: the authors draw on a wide range of sources, literary and historical, to illustrate SI. I would think that people from very different disciplinary or cultural backgrounds who wouldn't normally read a book 'like this' may be be drawn in, and progressively - even entertainingly - introduced to SI theory and its implications for Leadership research and development. 'The New Psychology of Leadership' stands a good chance of bridging the gap between the plausible, persuasive, but ultimately ephemeral 'pop' and the more soundly-based (but often slow to be taken up) areas of writing on organisations - corporate and governmental. It certainly appears to meet the criteria for a good new theory - it accounts for more of the observed data - and some may even find in it, links to the term 'Big Society', and thus a route through from ill-defined political slogan to something of more solid worth: practical guidance on leadership - how to mobilise people using the starting point of THEIR view of the world and what matters to them. It deserves to make a big splash in both academic and corporate worlds, and I would hope, win praise for its lucidity and accessibility. And, whatever other reviewers may say about it, I think most would agree with the authors when they state in the Preface 'The need for a new psychology of leadership has never been more pressing'.

This is an academic book and quite "heavy" to read. If you can stay with it though, it is masterful. It redefines leadership in the modern era better than most things around on this subject.
The analysis of the past theories of leadership are useful in understanding what we thought was the best - to copy in that era. Today we require a different approach and these writers are showning us the way. This book will make you pause and reflect on a subject of huge importance to us all.

I'm currently doing a leadership module as part of a Business Psychology course and can thoroughly recommend this book.

It contains the latest leadership and psychology research as well as being concise and easy to read.

Haslam, Reicher and Platow have produced an amazing book on leadership, a core theme in the psychological, social and economic sciences. The book is extremely well written, beautifully argued, and it combines theoretical depth with huge societal and political relevance. It is undoubtedly the best and most original book on leadership I've ever read. The authors, who are world leading social and organisational psychologists, have looked at leadership from a social identity perspective. This has allowed them to explain leadership in a radically new, and extremely convincing way. I strongly recommend this book to all those who work in groups and organisations, and to all those who are fascinated by issues concerning leadership, charisma, identity, social influence, and power.

An amazing book that addresses the inadequacies of previous books and theories on leadership. As well as providing compelling evidence for an Identity approach to leadership, the book provides aspiring and established leaders with the building blocks and tools to become (more) successful--the three "R"s of identity leadership: Reflecting, Representing, and Realizing. The book is peppered with numerous historical examples and research based evidence that support the underpinnings of identity leadership. One of my favourite examples is an historical recount of speeches by Neil Kinnock and Margaret Thatcher during their 1984 Party Conferences that were taking place during the great miner's strike (the most significant social conflict in Britain since World War II). Kinnock referred to the imposition of VAT on takeaway food as Thatcher imposing a tax on `fish and chips.' Haslam, Reicher and Platow artfully explain how the symbolic reference to a national dish, fish and chips, distances Thatcher from the in-group of the British public. Not to be outdone, in her speech, Thatcher referred to miners who continued to work through the strikes as `lions' (a symbol of Britishness and of British strength and resolve). The authors state, "in the play and counter-play of category symbols, Thatcher's lion is a higher card than Kinnock's fish and chips" (p. 209). This level of insight and meaning is evident throughout the book, allowing the reader to observe how identity leadership resonates with and explains the real-world. Reading this book will transform your understanding of, and approach to, leadership.

I have read this book as part of an appraisal of different thoughts about Leadership. I have to say that I found the book contradictory in parts and not very easy to read. Whilst I applaud the concept that Leadership is about the term `we' as opposed to `I', I didn't feel that it took into account the role of the follower and how crucial this was to the concept suggested. I felt that the book was repetitive in parts. I wouldn't be recommending this
