Product Description

The so-called 'New Perspective' suggests that traditional Protestant understandings of Paul, shaped by the Reformation, need revising-in particular the contrast between faith and works. This clear study outlines fundamental aspects of the New Perspective, evaluates whether it is a threat or a help, and sets out a fresh understanding of Paul and his theology. It's an essential guide for anyone wanting to get to grips with Paul's teaching in the light of recent study.

This short accessible book examines the controversial issue of the New Perspective on Paul. Often this debate has generated more heat than light, but Thompson has produced an excellent eirenical introduction that will help illuminate the debate.

He examines the problems with the Lutheran view that shaped the 'old perspective' and looks at how Sanders, Dunn and Wright have responded to that. He then looks at the benefits and the threats of the New Perspective in an even-handed way.

If you wondered what the New perspective is all about, then there is perhaps no better first place to look at than this booklet. A page of further reading is provided for those who want to take the issues further.

This is a great Grove booklet, and a must-read for anyone trying to get their head around what the NP on Paul is all about. The subheadings are really helpful and both the Old Perspective and the New, are clearly explained. Good for Bible students and anyone interested in the recent debates concerning Paul's standpoint.

I read just as I was beginning to try and get to terms with the latest Biblical research in this area.
This is a great place to start before getting into more hefty works by the likes of N T Wright.
As Grove books say - not the last word but often the first.

The book is light reading on the perspective of Paul. If you are studying theology, it gives you a good insight.
The Grove Books covers numerous subjects on theology, I would highly recommend this series.

I brought this to read for an essay, it gives a good overview of the 'New Perspective of Paul'. It is a good diving off point to read deeper.
