Product Description

Product Description

The New Penguin Dictionary of Music is the essential A-Z of some 1,000 years of Western music. It explores in detail the lives and achievements of a huge range of composers, and examines such key topics as music history (from medieval plainchant to contemporary minimalism), performers, theory and jargon. Written by an award-winning music critic, and blending scholarship with personal insight and opinion, this dictionary is both a pleasurable read and an invaluable and authoritative reference book for all lovers of music, whether amateur or professional.

From the Publisher

Some sample entries:

OCARINA

(It., little goose). Small wind instrument, normally oval in shape and made of terracotta or plastic, with holes for mouth and fingers. It is found worldwide, but only in very few classical scores (e.g. Ligeti's Violin Concerto).

CIRCLE OF FIFTHS

(Ger. Quintenzirkel). Imaginary wheel of the 12 notes or tonalities stepping in equal-tempered fifths: C, G, D, A, E, B, F#/Gb, C#/Db, Ab, Eb, Bb, F, and so on back to C. Because modulation though a fifth is straightforward, passages in diatonic music often move around an arc of fifths - or even, in two early preludes by Beethoven (Op.39), the entire circle.

PERI, JACOPO

(b. Rome/Florence, 20 Aug 1561; d. Florence, 12 Aug 1633). Italian composer, one of the founders of opera. After studies with Cristoforo Malvezzi he served the Medicis, composing and singing in the new style of expressive monody. His and Corsi's setting of Rinuccini's Dafne, performed in 1598, is the earliest recorded opera; nearly all its music is lost. He set a second such piece for the marriage in 1600 of Henry IV of France and Marie de' Medici, Euridice, to which Caccini added music. Both composers then completed their own versions. His later music includes further dramatic works and oratorios, of which little survives, and songs.

I bought an older edition of this book back in 1977, when my daughter began learning to play the piano and the violin. At that time, it served as an introductory reference to composers, pieces and some musical terms - a useful adjunct to the various music theory books we acquired over the years. The new edition, which I purchased in December 2010, is both bigger and better, with not only more entries, but also more detail under each entry. There are currently no music students in my household, but there are some avid listeners who like to know something about the piece, the composer, the musicians, they are listening to. The entries are often detailed enough to provide a level of information which is sufficient in itself, but the references are also a good jumping-off point, for those times when one wants to know more. This music dictionary is a valuable companion, already much consulted when we plan our concert listening. I am glad I bought it.

Apart from the Bible this is possibly the next best book. Actually I think the Bible might be slipping to second.

Utterly brilliant 10 Jun 2009

This dictionary is a cornucopia of insight. Paul Griffiths beautifully compresses a staggering amount of information, going far beyond the mere rehearsal of facts. I'm repeatedly amazed by how comprehensive the dictionary is as well. In the age of Wikipedia and countless errors circulating in poorly informed program notes, Griffiths remains a consistently reliable source and is a true pleasure to read. This is an indispensable reference.

Elitist attitude 3 Feb 2012
By Casca - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is mis-titled. It should read Dictionary of Western Classical Music, for this is what it is about.Other types of music are mentioned in passing or ignored. The tone of this book is that classical music is superior. This said, it does serve as a comprehensive ready reference to western classical music. Note: if you have the 4th ed. 1977 by Arthur Jacobs, keep it, for it has some entries that are not in the Paul Griffiths edition.
