This 1967 studio album clearly shows why Buddy and his band were selling out clubs and theatres across the States, (soon to be the world), with a really exciting sound and new modern arrangements.
Buddy really sounds at home on this album swinging the band through all the top tunes presented here, from the opening track 'Away We Go', to the ridiculously fast brush playing on 'Standing In A Hammock', to the multi-time signatured 'Diablous'.This album really will excite any Big Band fan who has a pulse ! Buddy has a few breaks here and there but no huge drum solo's, all you have here is a superb band playing out and taking the Big Band sound to a younger audience. I also like the fact that this is a studio album rather than another 'live' album, this gives the album a different feel up against 'Big Swing Face' and 'The Swingin' New Big Band' albums. If you own those two albums then 'The New One' is a REAL must to buy, you will not be disapointed I can assure you, and drummers should check out his fills on the track 'Machine' and try to keep up with the time signature changes on 'Diablous', I promise you it will drive you crazy ! (For the people who do not like the band playing funky-poppy numbers then you will be happy to note that these tunes all swing, no grooves on this album at all).
A truly classic Big Band record with some of the best Big Band Drumming you will EVER hear in your life, do your-self a favour and buy a copy today !

Have idea this album cover is the same as a Buddy Rich LP but with a different title. This CD (The New One!) contains studio recordings by Buddy Rich's then newly formed big band which have the same swing and enthusiasm as the two previous live recordings. This mid-Sixties album has a band of very technical capable musicians, many who are not that well known. The New One! is straight ahead swing plus the bonus of interesting alternative and previously rejected takes. Glad I caught up with this album.

Bought this for my husband after he had heard two of the pieces played on the Clare Teal programme on BBC Radio. Personally I cannot comment on the quality or content as I am not a jazz fan, but my husband raves over it and says it is excellent, and one to listen to time and time again.
