I have older The Jerome Biblical Commentary. It is the most scholarly and detailed single-volume Bible commentary I have (and I have lots). It is a bit difficult to read because of all the notes and references; and it seems to be written for scholars so it doesn't "dumb down" anything. Written by Roman Catholics but valuable for everyone (even United Methodists like me).

Very thorough, very detailed, verse by verse commentary, but a tough read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything in one volume, WOW!!! 14 May 1999

Format:Hardcover
I have several commentaries and this is the most complete for a one volume edition. Worth twice the weight of others in this class. Written exclusively by Catholics but fair and objective in presenting latest developments in biblical scholarship-perhaps to a fault. Easy to use once aquainted with it. May be a tough read but, worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource for theologians. 6 May 2001

Format:Paperback
The New Jerome Biblical Commentary: Student Edition has been a wonderful resource, that I have been able to use for my undergraduate theology essays and has also been a great aid for me when I have prepared sermons for the college Prayer Group. It is the second book that I use after the bible!! It is clear and easy to follow and a amazing resource edited by three top theologians.

4.0 out of 5 stars of value to serious students 12 Oct 2009
Format:Hardcover
a very insightful and rigorous commentary.
Liberal - and catholic - but still of value to protestant students.
Often spots things that classic evangelical commentaries miss, so a good 2nd or 3rd commentary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not liberal Slop but honest scholarship 1 Sep 2005
Format:Hardcover
This is a book that should not be ignored as we investigate and interpret Holy Scripture. The Church of Christ is facing real challenges today and these callenges will not be overcome by sinking our heads into the sands of irrational fundementalism.

If you can't afford a new copy buy a copy second hand and open up a collection of some of the finest thinking from modern, spirit filled, Christians.

St Jerome said "Igonorane to the bible is like ignorance to Christ", therefore the Catholic church has either set it's self up for a big fall (if the book leaves the reader igonorant)or been very clever in the naming of this book.

I feel the latter is true as the book gives the reader a wealth of information from many sources. It is clear, precise, easy to navigate and is a very interesting read.

1.0 out of 5 stars DESTROYING THE BIBLE 20 Mar 2013
Format:Hardcover
Not only the editors claim that most stories presented in the Bible are fictitious, but they also gave themselves Nihil Obstat for their own work! Just search the internet, there are plenty of opinions about the damage this edition does to the Bible. Please do some research on your own before deciding to support this work by spending your money on it.
