Book Description

31 Mar 2011
Historically despised the new Gypsies are there by choice, not heritage. Unrelated to the Roma, the movement began in 1986 when a group of Post-Punk Anti-Thatcher protesters headed out of London into the English countryside. McKell followed these New Age Travellers to the West Country and over the years he watched them become a hybrid tribe - the new gypsies - present-day rural anarchists, living the subversive lifestyle in elaborately decorated horse-drawn caravans. Known as 'Horse-drawn', the new gypsies share a desire for sustainability, a love of self-reliance and a disdain for the trappings of contemporary life. For more than a decade McKell has focused his lens on travellers of all ages: parents, children, couples and loners. With sensitivity and honesty he captures a way of life that seems at once romantic, strange, beautiful and simple. The result is a deeply insightful portrayal of a culture that eschews the traditional creature comforts of urban life in favour of the simplicity and freedom of the natural world.

Is this the arty side of MBFGW? If it is, it seems there are some very photogenic 'New Gyspies' out there, although when I showed the book to a photographer, he grunted and said that everything looks good with a turquoise background. I loved leafing through the pictures, looking at the weatherbeaten faces. It all seemed a little contrived though to stumble across Kate Moss in the book, and that is why I didn't rate it more highly - didn't seem quite as raw.

4.0 out of 5 stars A High Production Value Portrait Collection 9 Aug 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm currently engaged in a project photographing the Romani community in Serbia so I'm interested in any other photographers work and approach in the same broad area - even though the context is actually radically different. In the main this is a collection of fine portraits of striking characters largely against plain backgrounds - some against blue canvas sheeting - in the broad style of Avedon's In the American West - but much more sympathetic in tone and style. There's actually relatively little of the context of the travellers' lives - little of the narrative I personally would have liked. The ones that are in the book are very powerful - so perhaps it's just been a matter of culling the numbers to fit in with publishing criteria. So personally I'm not at all sure about Val Williams' assessment in a concluding appreciative essay at the end of the book where she says that the photography 'combines all the sublimity of fashion photography with the enquiring edge of documentary'. Nevertheless this is a fine book and I can see why Iain McKell has been so enthralled with these remarkable characters.

from a photographic point of view this is a great book. However with the iinclution of Kate Moss,it sort of throws the whole question of who these people into disaray are they themselfs actors or models in a fashion shot.I knew Ian when he was going out with wendy from trasvamp days.Hope this sort helps and please excuse my very very dyslexic spelling!
