This book is exactly what it says it is- an encyclopedia. It is divided into no less than five "books." Measuring in at about one and a half inches thick, if the info contained inside doesn't help you get bigger, just try lifting the book!

A quick rundown of each chapter. The first book is basically an introduction to bodybuilding, covering a lot of miscellaneous, but important topics. The second book covers the training programs, the third the body part exercises, and the fourth book competing. The fifth and last book covers nutrition and diets.

As you can tell, there's really only one word to describe this book- comprehensive. Would have liked to see a little more on injuries, for example there only about a half page on shoulder injuries, but then again this isn't exactly a sports medicine book either. Weightlifters who have a shoulder problem or rotator cuff tear might also want to take a look at Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars All The Lifting Literature You’ll Ever Need 24 Feb. 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This massive tome has essentially become my manual. For almost a year I applied myself to Scott McRobert’s minimalist-conservative approach with almost no results to show for it (i followed it loyally). Prior to that I had experimented with other approaches such as training one muscle-group per day (3-5 sets per exercise max), and even training all muscle-groups in one day (1-3 sets per muscle group).

None of the other approaches I tried required as much brutally hard work and training time as the Schwarzenegger approach does. However, I quickly learned that there really is no substitute for hard work.

The guidelines in this book are the culmination of around one hundred years of collective body-building expertise, years of blood, sweat and tears from decades of trial and error. That alone should satisfy the curiosity of someone considering the viability of the hardcore approach insisted upon in this ground-breaking work.

The Basic Program’s prescription amounts to 5-8 sets per EXERCISE across a two muscle-group session per day resulting in three sessions performed twice per week, i.e. chest & back is sessions 1 performed twice per week; shoulders & arms is session 2 and legs & lower back session 3 both also performed twice per week. This is essentially training six days per week and 30+ sets per day. Furthermore, the rest periods between sets are encouraged to be no more than a minute to a minute and a half in order to push the muscle to it’s maximum point of exertion.

My one gripe is that I would personally have liked to have seen fewer pictures of professional bodybuilders posing, and more pictures of professional bodybuilders TRAINING.

By Zach J
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Very in depth, full of infor and tips. very happy with the product. it is what it says on the tin. might however be slightly out of date given it was printed in the late 80s. though who can stump info from one of the great legends before the mass monsters came and took over the stage?!

4.0 out of 5 stars Too many photos, but still good 6 Mar. 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Some reviewers were complaining that book is too generic - I disagree. It goes well into details, although one has to give it in-depth reading in order to find answers. Too many pictures of steroid flesh is abit distracting though, thats why give it only 4stars.
