This book will inspire you if you are new to crewel work - lots of small contemporary projects to build confidence and technique and is a really modern approach to what was considered an old lady's hobby.
Note that instead of using Linen Twill as suggested you can use Linen Union fabric which is much easier to get hold of.

I had never done embroidery o crewel before and this book teaches you the basic stiches and shows you modern designs and a few projects to apply them to.
